Ogedeis beard is still a riddle for me. He brides it and then its tucked behind his left ear, isn't it?
... *.* I love your mongolian/russian inspired art. It's so full of inspiration for me. Thank you so much for this gift. <3

The tallest one reminds me of whats-his-name, the bad guy from Disney's Mulan. Nice style, I like this a lot!

I'm pretty sure that was Atilla the Hun. Different nomadic, largely horse based, conquer and tribute system warrior tribe. XD

Fun fact, given the poor nutrition for the time, most people were much shorter than we are today. Ghengis was said to be farely tall, though in reality he was more likely slightly bellow the average. So chances are that you are as tall as Temujin

i know that in paintings, some of genghis khan's sons had the red hair portrayed in this sketch-- but i always wondered why. is this meant to imply that genghis khan's mistresses/himself were of european descent also? or was it some kind of mutation...?

Phobs In reply to kimitama [2013-05-28 22:17:06 +0000 UTC]
there's a legend inside Borjigin family, that Alan-goa born their ancestor Bodonchar from ray of light and red hair is a divinity sign.
They really could be red - lot of asians have red or blond hair and blue eyes, there's no need in european descent for this.
sorry for my english

CaoimheCaer In reply to Phobs [2013-05-28 22:37:30 +0000 UTC]
Could the red hair possibly be a result of dye? Henna has been popular for centuries as a hair dye, tattoo ink, and body paint, and it does leave a red tint (although not as red as your portrayal).

kimitama In reply to CaoimheCaer [2013-05-28 22:44:32 +0000 UTC]
checked on google-- red hair occurs naturally in some central asian ethnic groups apparently
i didn't think about henna, though. that might also be an explanation!

CaoimheCaer In reply to kimitama [2013-05-31 02:03:22 +0000 UTC]
Henna would only be plausible though if the shade of red were more cinnamon, rather than the red Phobs has in this work - you need the right genetics to get that bright a shade of red.

kimitama In reply to CaoimheCaer [2013-05-31 02:12:14 +0000 UTC]
It's a drawing-- the dull red of henna/Central Asian coloring wouldn't look as vibrant and pretty as the saturated red Phobs draws it as. There's such thing as artistic license!
The red is duller in actual historical paintings C:

Haha, I know its a drawing But I have seen people with red hair that is practically that shade.

kimitama In reply to CaoimheCaer [2013-06-01 22:08:05 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, of course, but I'm just saying-- artistic license, also. Phobs's color choices aren't the last historical authority on what henna dyed hair looks like.
although now that i think about it- didn't they have bleach? could have just bleached hair first, and then dyed it...
(or maybe it's just natural and we're all wrong |D)

The mutation exists to a lesser extent in Asian and African populations. But they could've been of European descent too. He had a lot of women....

I actually just went on google- it turns out that red hair is a common mutation in the Uyghur people (who inhabit modern-day xinjiang, hunan, and central asia) so it could have possibly occurred naturally in khan's line!!
