Let the forfeit
Be nominated for an equal pound
Of your fair flesh, to be cut off and taken
In what part of your body pleaseth me.

I sort of feel sorry for Shylock.

Always. He's a very tragic character, but he's also kind of a jerk, but only because people were a jerk to him. He looses everything in the end, which always gets me down.

I know. I think shakespeare had a bit of a prejudice against Jews.

That's the big question about the Merchant of Venice, though: was he just telling a cautionary tale and trying to make us feel empathy for Shylock, or was the whole play and the author of it just anti-seministic?

Merchant of Venice is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays! I saw the show at the Royal Shakespeare Theater, and have been in awe of it ever since. You have illustrated it BEAUTIFULLY! I don't recognize the first panel. Was it a scene referenced in the show? Thank you for such magnificent works of art!

I'm guessing that's the wreck of one of Antonio's vessels.

I had to read the Merchant of Venice in high school. Shakespeare's not too bad if you have enough time to understand it, but your art here really makes the story come alive.
