Or they're just chanting softly. I imagine this is what happens when Morgoth battles Fingolfin. Like, he just strolls out of Andband all ominously, and all you hear are the legions of Morgoth chanting his name.

I imagine that would be a horrific experience, to stand there and hear all these chants. Like, the soft chanting of myriads of hoarse voices must become a truly thrilling rumble.

It's probably the reason why Morgoth won. There was Fingolfin, a lowly Elf in the face of a god, and he was kicking Morgoth's ass. The rhythmic chanting of hundreds of thousands of soldiers cheering your name, encouraging you to win, are you really going to let them down? Are you really going to lose to someone weaker than you? Hell no. So Morgoth did what he does best, and destroyed Fingolfin, the greatest hero in Elven history. On that day, the world was reminded of what it was like to be helpless. On that day, they knew what it felt like to be doomed. If the greatest hero in the world could not win, no one could.
