По-нашему лежит здесьsorry for my english:
Another Mongol Invasion strip.
let's say it's smth like continuation of this
***The Last Judgment in russian iconography of 13 century didn't look like that. The image which I use here was created in 15 century in Novgorod, and it's not even fresco,it's an icon xP Decide to use it because it's scary as shit really impressed me.
***Torgauds - the day guard, I don't know how it sound on english xP
***stop asking about nestorianism. no connection, and you know it.

Did you know some of the invading Mongols were Nestorian Christians? So some of the Mongols may understood the art.

I've always wanted to go to Russia to visit the churches and cathedrals. I've visited ones in Poland and the Czech Republic and was impressed.
Slightly related to the picture itself (): I've heard that a lot of late medieval Last Judgment iconography, both from East and West Christianity, were inspired by the invasions of the Huns and Mongols. Is that true?

I love the flow of these comics and how some frames lack borders for the sake of clarity. Gives my eyes a time to rest after the previous more complex (but great) scenes/frames.
Beautiful as always.

Holy crap this rocks my socks!!! I love your style so much, it's so smooth and yet edgy at the same time. I hope that still made sense!
And I love your historical story-line, it's such a change-up from what I see here everyday.
I really do enjoy your comic strips.

I must stay close to the dazzling one,
Very close...
I looked at the original my first thought was
"Whoa, is this some kind of 15th century Russian Acid-trip?" Second thought;
"Sixteenth century you idiot. Is that satan in the corner?" Third thought;
"uhh, who's the poor sap on his lap?"
"Hey! that rhymed!"

The paintings of that period seem to have a lot of troubling imagery. Some of them are more subtle though. Like a Where's Waldo with mindfucks instead of a man in a striped shirt.

The Mongols knew about Christianity (Batu's own son was Christian [link] ), but it was Nestorian Christianity, which thought representations of human beings were disgusting. Batu is probably expressing his contempt for the "painted walls," rather than their novelty.
As always, beautiful work.

Phobs In reply to bensen-daniel [2012-06-10 10:59:22 +0000 UTC]
Mongols knew about all religions, and Batu was shamanist, Berka was a muslim, Sartaq was a nestorian. But Batu couldn't see orthodox churches of the Byzantian type before invasion (may be only in some exceptional circumstances,which I can't imagine,because first orthodox archdiocese in empire was created after Ogedei)

bensen-daniel In reply to Phobs [2012-06-10 12:37:18 +0000 UTC]
Right. I was explaining to your other readers that Batu's comment about "painted walls" wasn't because he was ignorant of Christianity.
Anyway, you know he might have seen European Christian iconography before his invasion of Ryazan. There were many European artisans (Catholic and Orthodox) in Karakorum during his lifetime (they made the famous Silver Tree of Karakorum), and they certainly would have made examples of icons. Of course, Batu might not have been impressed by them.

Phobs In reply to bensen-daniel [2012-06-10 13:19:12 +0000 UTC]
But Batu was in Karakorum only twice - on Ogedei's coronation and may be on Mongke coronation,but I don't think it's true ) And before invasion he lived in lands with prevailing Islamic culture - so I think there is a possibility that he had a very fractional information about Christian art ))

Well, I was thinking of Muslim iconoclasm, but a brief look at wikipedia ([link] ) tells me all of that happened either too late or too early. Subutai might have seen examples of Muslim wall-art before this.

I have to agree with Batu, Orhtodox Churches really do have some vividly scary frescoes and icons.
I love your way of storytelling, it always amazes me and keeps me captivated!
the frescoes as you painted them look like they came off the church wall themselves!
