This is absolutely beautiful, as usual, but as an Asian I have to point this out - whenever I see Asians portrayed in styles that value 'realism' more, I always see Asians with significant brow ridge with the part of the nose between the eyes sticking out from the plane of the face. That's not how Asians look - we don't have much brow ridge (for most people), and the part of the nose between our eyes is in the plane of our face. It's just been bugging me, since Western styles are supposed to be more realistic, but for some reason when it comes to drawing Asians the Asians always start looking Caucasian . . . ><;

Just curious, as an artist who wants to draw different ethnicities realistically - can you please give some examples of artists that draw Asians that look ok to you? Nothing too photorealistic, nothing too extremely stylized. It might help those of us who are interested in this thing.

Hmm, this guy draws Asians really well

This [link] is a photo but it represents the female Asian face fairly well, I think - wide browridge that's not prominent, no crease in eyelid - also note that the eyes don't point upwards. I know you asked for artists, but I like these pictures as well [link] [link]

I also liked how Disney stylized Mulan (minus the eyes that always pointed up for whatever reason), though that might be considered too stylized.

What do you mean by eyes that point up? o_O

lemonsnapples In reply to GreenSprite [2011-12-11 22:19:42 +0000 UTC]

Slanted eyes, I guess. When Asians are portrayed, for whatever reason most of their eyes end up looking like this => \/ The media seems to prefer hiring actors/actresses that fill that stereotype as well (e.g. Lucy Liu). Some Asians look like that, yes, but if you look at the pictures I provided their eyes aren't that slanted. Plus most Asians don't view themselves looking that way.

LadyGreySun In reply to lemonsnapples [2011-12-12 12:15:07 +0000 UTC]

I have to say I have some asian blood ( in fact, mongol blood) So it is weird to see I'm the only one in my family with somewhat slanted eyes ( when I laugh or wink, you can see it best) and the rest of my face is rather european. For example, I have a european nose but eyes+cheeks of an asian. So I can understand why Phobs draw their characters like that (see Borte...). But I see your point ~lemonsnapples, too!
( not to mention that I positively love some asian actors, but that's another story xD)

lemonsnapples In reply to LadyGreySun [2011-12-12 16:52:12 +0000 UTC]

It's really not Phobs' fault that he drew Asians that way, that seems to be the way Westerners majorly view Asians. This girl [link] for example has eyes slanted downwards. It's just cognitive bias - people tend to ignore observations that goes against their stereotype and dismiss them as unusual, when in fact a lot of people don't have super slanted, super pointy eyes.

I have to agree with this- a wider bridge and flatter nose tip would be helpful in the portrayal of these characters as asian.

I think everybody could use a reminder that small, unknown, backwater civilizations were still civilizations. All those detail-rich garments, armors and headdresses are stunning.

And Tolui is HAWT.

Well sure, if you like to call the second largest empire in the world "a small, unknown backwater civilization"...

OKami-hu In reply to GreenSprite [2011-12-11 22:12:56 +0000 UTC]

It was in Asia, among mountains that were hard to cross, and nobody effing KNOWS anything about them - even I don't, and they burned up my country.

Besides, even though they had conquered quite a bit of land, the heart of the empire, and the center of culture is relatively small, if you don't measure it in land but in people. Then again, I can be wrong. I know nothing of these people.

My comment was actually a compliment.

I've been researching Alexander Nevsky and his relations with the Tartars in the thirteenth century for an essay and apparently Alexander was BFFs with Sartak, son of Batu. I'd love to see you draw some of their adventures. :3
