Jack chuckled as the soldier paraded above his head. "Nice climbing. I don't have that level of skill, but I'm not terrible at climbing. At least, as long as you don't consider my gym teacher's opinion."

Casper gave him a smile, settling down on a ledge across from Jack and at about eye level. "Why, thank you," he said. "It's a passtime."

Jack grinned as he slouched in his spot. He heard a heavy rumble from overhead that caused him to frown. He ducked his head through the entrance just in time to get a face full of dirt and dust. He choked and coughed, pulling his head back and wiping his face. "I think," he wheezed, "the front half of the cave just collapsed." He coughed several more times before pulling out his inhaler. After taking one good breath of the medicine and holding it in his lungs for the count of ten, he exhaled.

"What?!" Several soldiers rushed forward to look at it for an opening, but to no avail.Β
"At least the tornado can't get in now..." Casper said softly, trying to look on the bright side, starting back down the cave wall.

Jack examined the loose dirt and rocks, poking at it reluctantly. "I might be able to kick our way out of it. But we should probably wait until the morning so we don't get caught in a tornado." He glanced at the men. "Unless you know of another way out?"
((I didn't have it, but I did find it.))

"There might be a back way out..." one of the soldiers said, starting towards the back of the cave to poke about in corners.
"Heyheyhey, no," Casper said, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. "Bad idea. You don't know what's back there."

Jack sized up the way through the back of the tunnel. It looked like he would just fit if he crawled on his hands and knees. "If you really think there is a way out, I can go first. If someone could shine a light, too, that would be awesome. Otherwise, I wouldn't really be able to see much."
Carefully, he got on his hands and knees and started crawling towards the back of the cave.

Jack grinned at Casper, feeling a little cocky due to his new proportions. "But I doubt there's anything bigger than me. Besides, if we go this way and find a way out that saves me some energy. If we don't find anything within a few minutes, we can come back and I'll try to kick the wall out."

Casper frowned. "Goblins tend to lurk in caves," he said in a tone that suggested Jack should have known this already. "They're small, but you don't want to run into them. Even if you're a giant."
π: 0 β©: 1
coalwhite In reply to Phoenix-FireMage [2014-04-22 02:54:44 +0000 UTC]
"..Goblins?" Jack's bravado deflated. "Yeah, I didn't know such things existed. What do they look like? What do they do?" He peered into the darkness of the back of the cave, trying to see if he could make out any forms in the dark. However, his forward motion had stopped and he had no intentions to go further.

"Where are you from?" Casper said with an exasperated sigh. "Haven't you ever seen a goblin before? They're about four feet tall; bipedal, though I personally wouldn't call them humanoid; green-skinned, and reallyΒ tough. You never see them out of a group, and they'll swarm you if you get too close. And they bite harder than anything else in the known world."

"Yeah, see, none of that exists over on my side. It's all just a myth, a story to scare kids." Jack shrugged. He made sure the soldiers were clear of his hands and legs before backing up. He sat down on his knees and turned over to sit on his butt. Slowly, he extended his legs. The soles of his shoes touched the rock wall when his legs were just over halfway extended. Satisfied, he sighed and took a good puff of his inhaler.
"You guys might want to get behind me. I don't know which way this wall will collapse."

Jack paused and sat up, listening intently. "Yeah, I hear something alright but that's not the roar of a tornado. And I from Kansas City, Texas. But I was camping out at Enchanted Rock with some friends in Fredericksburg. I walked away from the campsite on a dare, and I had to pee, but I got lost in the woods. I finally found that road, fell asleep and you guys had found me by then." He shrugged.

Jack nodded as he tilted his head and listened again. "There is definitely something roaring, but that is not a tornado. Tornadoes usually sound like freight-trains. That, that sounds more like, uh, I don't really know. But it's not as deep as a freight train. Or as loud. It's kind of dull and, uh, well, not the same kind of rhythm as a tornado."

Phoenix-FireMage In reply to coalwhite [2014-04-24 02:56:07 +0000 UTC]

"Do y'all not have motor vehicles of any kind?" Jack asked. "That roar doesn't sound like it's coming from outside..." He glanced around the cave ceiling, trying to make sure he hadn't accidentally knocked an integral piece of stone left and was about to bring the ceiling down on top of them. Thankfully, the ceiling seemed intact and to be just fine.

Phoenix-FireMage In reply to coalwhite [2014-05-10 05:32:24 +0000 UTC]
"We do have motor vehicles, just no 'freight trains', whatever those are," Casper said, looking down the cave to try and see what was making that sound. "Doesn't sound good, whatever it is..." he said.
((So... what is it?))

coalwhite In reply to Phoenix-FireMage [2014-05-10 13:32:56 +0000 UTC]
((I was going to say a flash flood. From all the rain that had poured down earlier.))
Jack frowned as the sound came closer and closer. Finally, it clicked in his mind. His eyes doubled in size and he started kicking at the wall again.
"It's a flash flood!" he yelled.

((Ah, got it.))
Immediately, all the soldiers joined him in his efforts to open the cave, though they were careful to stay clear of the giant's feet. Before long, one had broken through, scrambling through the hole he'd made, which was barely large enough to allow him through.

"Move away!" Jack shouted above the rushing of the water that was quickly flooding their little cave. He aimed the heels of his hiking boots for the tiny hole the soldier had created and kicked with everything he had. The water was halfway up his arms by the time the wall of rock finally gave way. Water emptied out into the rest of the cave, and the outside world, washing some of the miniature soldiers with it.
Jack scrambled on his hands and knees to where Casper lay, anxiously peering down at the tiny man. "Are you alright? Is anything broken or anything?"

Jack sat back on his heels, relieved. "Good." He glanced around at the men that lay scattered on the ground, some moaning and some silently bearing the aches and pains of fresh bruises and a few checking for broken bones. "I hope the rest of your men are alright as well." Somewhere in the distance, an owl hooted and a coyote howled. For the first time, Jack noticed the sun had set and the moon was beginning its ascent into the night sky. "Well, so much for the cave. Do you know anywhere else to rest for the night? Because I'm fine with being out in the open. Or whatever you decide."

coalwhite In reply to Phoenix-FireMage [2014-06-18 04:33:27 +0000 UTC]
Jack shrugged. "I know you. Not them. So, to me, they're your men." He looked up as thunder rumbled ominously overhead. "The tornado may be gone, but I don't think the storm that caused it has fully passed yet."

Jack watched as Casper and the rest of the men set their camping equipment up. When they were all finished, he was stifling his fourth yawn. "I think it may be time for me to hit the hay as well."

Jack blinked and stared at Casper. It took him a moment to register the teasing. He laughed when it finally clicked in his head. "Yeah, guess I'll have to make due with the grass." He laid down on the ground, sprawled out on his stomach, and tucked his hands under his chin. He smiled at Casper as his eyelids drooped. "Night, then. See you in the morning."

coalwhite In reply to Phoenix-FireMage [2014-08-03 15:56:57 +0000 UTC]
Jack sighed and offered his wrists. "I understand. It's not your choice." Once again, though, he surreptitiously flexed his wrists. He waited patiently for the men to do what they had been instructed to.

Phoenix-FireMage In reply to coalwhite [2014-08-10 02:43:28 +0000 UTC]
This time, however, they tied each wrist individually before tying them together with a bit of a tether between them and attaching one end to a nearby sturdy-looking tree.

((I have a bit of a... different character in mind for this, and it's sure to make the situation interesting. She's mute. Long story short, she has a scar across her neck from when some creeps were trying out some experiments on her and a few others who were... Unique like her. Her and the others that got experimented on (and eventually all escaped) were each able to do something special, which will be revealed later. Also, if I'm remembering correctly, Archie?))
The brunette girl lay stiff, her heart racing in terror. The feel of a blade near her neck brought images from her past flashing through her mind, and caused a tear to run down the side of her face as she closed her eyes tightly. She tried to keep her focus, the last thing she wanted to do was use her ability on accident; that would no doubt make things much worse.Β
She wondered who it could be, what they might want. Were they 'special' like her and the others that escaped? Did they work with those... those people? No, if they worked with them, she'd have woken up tied down on a table, locked up indoors, or in a vehicle on her way back. That was good. Anything was better than ending up back there.Β
But then what did they want? Did they peek under the decorative scarf she wore and see the scar it hid? Did they suspect the problem that could accompany that scar? Not everyone with a scar like that would have the same complication she faced, but hopefully the scar might make it easier for... whoever it was to realize what was wrong, why she said nothing.

"Very good," the voice growled, and the blade didn't move from its position on her neck in the least. A very small weight came to rest on her collarbone, helping to hold her down. "Now, what are you doing here?" When she didn't reply, the owner of the voice threatening her, who clearly didn't know she was mute, growled, "Well? Speak up? I'm waiting here! What are you doing out of your territory? Did you know that you are in direct violation of the treaty?"

She opened her mouth as if to speak, but the closest she could make to a sound was different patterns to her breath. She tried as best she could, making slightly louder breathy-noises followed by short, quick breaths. She noticed the weight at her collarbone, and tried to think of what to do. Guessing the weight might indicate which side they were on, she moved her hand on the opposite side very slowly, trying to make it clear she wasn't trying to cause trouble, and reached for the scarf around her neck.Β
She kept very alert for any reaction, carefully taking hold of the side of her scarf with two fingers. She made sure to keep her movements as slow as humanly possible, pulling the scarf back to show the scar across her throat, hopeful that it would help... whoever it was... to understand why she gave no spoken response.
She couldn't help the tears in her eyes, terrified of what was going on as well as confused. Wanting to communicate she didn't understand what they spoke of, she used the hand that wasn't at the scarf to draw a question mark in the loose soil before tapping at it lightly.
(Hmmm.... What kind of bonus?)

At first, the person threatening her seemed to tense, and the blade was pressed a little closer. However, once she showed the scar, it relaxed a little. "Oh. So you're a mute one, huh?" the voice asked, sounding gentler now. "That... may make things more complicated." There was an audible sigh. "Look, will you promise to behave yourself if we let you sit up? Nod -slowly- if you agree."
