I had a thought it could be to the death but then because there's magic in this universe the characters could be resurrected.

Then they could be to the death and are just resurrected in the end, or since they are captives not.

I'd like to keep characters around and raise the stakes on each match. Maybe if part of who they are gets lost with resurrection?
Mostly, I'd rather not constantly make new characters after each match.
