Description I decided to take a small break from drawing a do some sculpting! It's been way to long, but to my delight I haven't lost my touch. This is a sculpture of Yennian the Gold. I used Super Sculpey for the base and the rest was made in a polymer clay called Miliput. The Miliput dries into a hardy plastic and refuses to break or crack, so this guy is as sturdy as an actually toy! The Nova featured in this set of photos was made by AlexVanArsdale Β roughly 12 years ago. It's amazing how fast time flies! Also, that's a figure I made of Malderane maybe 8 years ago, the scaling is waay off by the way. If the scaling was correct, Yennian's head would come up to Malderane's chest.Β

Sadly, I didn't make a video of myself making him. However, I did take a lot of work in progress photos! So I might post some of those.

I have heard of Milliput. Seems a lot of people use it for figures and toy modifications too. Looks like it takes detail well.

It works really well for customization/modifications, it sticks to anything you can put your mind too. You can sculpt the finest details by brushing it with a wet paintbrush and then dipping your sculpting tool in a bit of water, it makes smooth lines and makes carving large chunks out for wrinkles easy. It is kinda unerving because it gives you a three hour window to get what you need done, so it's best to do it in small increments.

I will have to try it!Β  I use Apoxie Sculpt now.Β  But I'm always on the lookout for new mediums.

Thanks! It's been like waaaay too long since I sculpted. The last thing I made was Alex's Kervak model which is over three years ago or more. I personally like doing it more than drawing but due to complications with my hands I can't do it very often.

But, I do have a long Vacation coming and I might make a Malderane to scale with him which would be sick! He would stand bout 6-7 inches tall.

I love sculpting just as much as I love drawing!Β  Or perhaps "making" would be a more accurate term.Β  Because I like using clay, building with cardboard or using anything to get the result I want.Β  But I like making things.Β Β

Aw!Β  That's too bad!Β  I can imagine how hard hand troubles would be.Β Β

Oooh.Β  That would be super cool!Β  So you are using a 1:12 scale?Β Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PhoxnSparky In reply to chill13 [2019-12-15 14:57:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it was kinda unfair of me to say I like sculpting over drawing, I truly love them both. Especially when your drawings turn out looking 3D!

Yes I am! I found the skeleton base of Yennian laying around in my old sculpting supplies, I really can't remember why I made it. I think I was trying to make a night and his horse or something like that in the 1:12 scale, so that's why he's so much bigger then the Malderane I currently have.

chill13 In reply to PhoxnSparky [2019-12-15 15:54:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes!Β  I am discovering with some things I need to make them to be able to draw them.Β  I have a major spatial deficiancy when it comes to drawing.Β  So rooms, buildings or vehicles are just really hard for me to do.Β  But if I can physically MAKE them and take a picture of the angle I want, things become much easier.Β  And then I have a cool model to boot.

Oh.Β  Interesting!Β  I started out customizing 1:12 figures, which are super cool becasue you can get quite a bit of detail on them.Β  But I am kind of moving to 1:18 because I really want to create environments for the figures I make and I only have so much space to store such things.Β  So there are a lot of super cool and super posable 1:18 figures and they are still big enough to customize, but are small enough that the environments for them aren't going to be huge.

I actually use my Phox figure a lot to draw her head at tough angles, it's amazing how much it helps. Oh yeah, I am the same when it comes down to backgrounds and interiors! I find myself making a rough shape of a room in Blender and tracing over it's general shape.

Nice! Actually having a nice environment for your figures would be awesome. It would be hard pressed indeed to make scenery for the 1:12 figures LOL.

Heh. Yeah. They would gave to be pretty big.

Blender is a ton of fun. If you ever have a question, you can just go to Blender Guru's youtube channel, that guy is the master of Blender! He's been using it since day one and has all of the tricks.

Oh!Β  Good to know.Β  I admit it scares me a little.Β  Looks like there is a lot of new stuff to learn and seems like their might be some math involved.

Though, my friend who owns a jewelry store is considering getting a 3d printer for his business and it would be super cool to be able to create jewelry using 3d tools.Β  There are a lot of things that are much easier in the computer than manually sculpting by hand......if one can get a handle on the software.Β  Not to mention that the jewelry specific 3d software is $6,000.Β  And Blender is free.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PhoxnSparky In reply to chill13 [2019-12-16 20:25:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, I haven't run into a lot of math related things in the latest version, if I have to do a bunch of numbers I just usually follow the tutorial I'm watching. The latest Blender 2.8 is amazing! It's way more user friendly, simple hot keys and a much more professional appearance. It also has a feature called Grease pencil, it's like drawing drawing and animates kinda like flash but even better in my opinion.

If he gets that would be awesome! You can make such intricate details in 3d, and it comes out 100% smooth. I've always wanted to make something and print it out.

chill13 In reply to PhoxnSparky [2019-12-17 03:06:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh! That is good to know! I really cant wait to try it.

Yeah. I Have seen the detail that can be made, especially with the resin ones. And some things I want to make jewelry wise are so hard to carve on such a tiny scale. But in a 3d program you can zoom in as close as you like!

PhoxnSparky In reply to chill13 [2019-12-18 23:27:52 +0000 UTC]

That's the best part with 3D printing. Some see it like cheating but I still think it's very much talent based because you still have to sculpt it in a sense. And the result is amazing!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to PhoxnSparky [2019-12-19 00:49:37 +0000 UTC]

I think it's just as much cheating as digital art is cheating.....it's not.Β  I think it's just another art medium with it's own advantages and difficulties like oils, chalk, watercolors, clay...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PhoxnSparky In reply to chill13 [2019-12-21 02:36:01 +0000 UTC]

That's right! It's amazing how some people view it as "false art" just because they don't understand the talent that goes behind it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to PhoxnSparky [2019-12-21 02:42:39 +0000 UTC]

Yep.Β  Your hand still has to do the work.Β  Hand moves, lines form.Β  You get to erase your mistakes easier but you still need the same understanding of colors, shapes, shading, all that stuff.Β  Ways to put together a pleasing composition.Β  In some ways it's harder because there is so much to learn about each program.

PhoxnSparky In reply to chill13 [2019-12-22 01:26:31 +0000 UTC]

100% true. 3D modeling is actually really challenging despite the fact you can undo mess ups. For me, I draw digitally because it's easier on my hands. I can preset the pin to be more sensitive so I don't have to press hard on the tablet where as on paper I have to press harder to get darker lines.

My friend just confirmed thst he will be getting a used version of that super cool jewelry program! And I will get to play with it! I'm super excited!

Oh. Bummer. It must be difficult to have hand problems when you want to make things. Is it a control issue or a pain issue? If you don't mind me asking.

PhoxnSparky In reply to chill13 [2019-12-22 19:07:34 +0000 UTC]

Nice! You gotta post some stuff you make with that program.

It's actually both. My tendons feel like they get inflamed and hurt. Also, my knuckles do get red and stiff, it's very much like arthritis. I do have a medical cream for them which helps me control how bad the symptoms get. It's a nuisance for sure but it's a lot more bearable with the medicine.

He's like his father who was the largest of his kind, so he's about the size of a horse while the other or more the size of ponies.

Oh yeah, I was four and would scribble on paper calling it art LOL. My oldest brother started his art career going like early 2000's.

I never improved until I hit my teens. Even now I get annoyed because my brother, who never draws, will sometimes do something at random and, even though he never draws unless he's trying to do something to play with the neighbor kids, he's at a level near what it took me ten years to reach.

Your oldest brother is amazing. I follow him on Instagram.
