Description Yo yo yo! Errr... that is, here's my rendition of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' ( a.k.a. TMNT's ) Baxter Stockman. Mine is a mish-mash of the vintage action figure and the vintage cartoon version. The brightest kid in the room may have some clue as to why I gave him ice-cream.

Yeah, I recently watched his mutation on Youtube. Kinda made him a bit wonky in the head.

Oh man I loved that ice cream scene with Baxter from the 80s cartoon. Until Shredder smashed his ice cream....

But his cones are melting in the sun!
I always loved that scene. Just the way Baxter just casually plunks down the ice cream cone onto the pillar and you hear this cartoon "squish" sound when he does so. That show had such 80's charm.

I think this is the best blending of the action figure and the cartoon version I've seen. I like that you kept the textures that were in the toy but kept the cartoon's overall style of clothing and face to make probably the definitive version of the 80's fly design. I also like that you made him look like a total dork instead of a frightening monster. For isn't that what the 1987 Baxter Fly was?

I also like that this is traditional.

You are also the brightest kid in the room. I barely remember it but I did just look at the old Archie comic book version. I did note that Baxter also set his come down in that as well.

Thanks so much. Yeah, I sort of made him they way I'd like the figure to have been made. The vintage action figure looked similar to this one but not quite as " cute ".

Oh man, I was a little older when the turtles cartoon came out, so my parents weren't keen on action figure gifts, but I did acquire this guy somehow.  One of the few I owned, because he was damn cool and your version is perfect.

Phraggle In reply to Lordwormm [2014-05-03 18:33:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Yeah, I kinda forget that I was like... hmm... I think I was in 8th grade when Playmates put out the first assortment of turtle figures and I gobbled them right up. I did that all throughout high school. It tapered off after the first few years of college mostly cuz they cut back on making cool mutant characters.

Fun fact. I was just cleaning some mildew off my brother's original Donatello figure & saw a letter M on the back of his head. So I checked my Michelangelo and I see that he has a letter D. Raph has an R and Leo has an L. I guess they either goofed & switched Don's & Mike's heads from the get-go or decided to purposely switch them.

By the way, my Krang came out of the bisque fire kilin today. I gonna paint his eyes, teeth, and veins tomorrow. Thankfully, the firing process gave him a nice pinkish color.)

Britts-Demesne In reply to Phraggle [2014-04-30 02:13:15 +0000 UTC]

He's pretty much completed - I applied several under-glazes to him today. After he gets fired, I'll apply a gloss glaze to make him all shiny and hopefully that will make him all slippery looking too.

Phraggle In reply to Britts-Demesne [2014-04-30 23:03:09 +0000 UTC]

Is he heavy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Britts-Demesne In reply to Phraggle [2014-05-01 03:11:38 +0000 UTC]

A little bit. He's gotten lighter due to being bisque fired (he was a lot heavier when our Ceramics lab tech and I got him to sit on the top shelf so he could go into one of our kilins.) Before clay gets fired, 'bone dry' clay still retains some leftover moisture; once it comes out of the bisque fire kilin then the clay piece is TOTALLY DRIED OUT, stronger, and lighter too.

I did back in high school. I did sculpts of some of my characters. Of course, this was back in the early 90s so, my skills were a bit on the ... rough side.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Britts-Demesne In reply to Phraggle [2014-05-03 19:28:48 +0000 UTC]

My skills are on the rough side too. I just like to play with clay anyways and get creative. One of the things that I found helpful this past semester was lots of personal space. I'm not entirely anti-social or claustrophobic around other people but I tend to focus better when I work alone.

As for rough skills, well, that's the awesome part about the clay medium - that wet clay has so much plasticity that you basically cannot screw it up and that allows you to keep working until you feel more confidant with working with clay. The only time you can hate the work is when it has been either the clay has been overworked (rewedging clay with some dampened clay works for that), that your piece(s) have dried out, or if it has already made it's trip in and out of the kilin.

Okay that second paragraph makes me sound like a teacher and I'm just after my AA in Art.

Phraggle In reply to Britts-Demesne [2014-05-08 23:16:35 +0000 UTC]

I know how that is. In high school, I kinda got stuck with the label of " really good artist " so I had to listen to a little bit of self loathing from other classmates. I never meant to put people to shame.

I got pretty good with Sculpey after a while and I also discovered this epoxy clay from a taxidermy place that works nice. I only have one sample of my sculpting skills posted here. It was back when I was doing custom Star Wars figures.

Now, actual ceramics I haven't done since high school, so... that was in 1992. It's been awhile. I do have a few of my ceramics things around the house still.

Being a teacher isn't so bad.

I'll keep a look out for your customed S.W. figures - just in case I wanna get into the customized toy hobby; that sounds interesting.
made a few customized Krangs and other figures and he seems to like my clay Ganglion (Krangs species in the 80's cartoon- not Ultrom or Kraang) so I thought I'd let you know about that artist.

I have a few pics of one posted like in the first section of my gallery here. I may have a sub-folder of either Star Wars or misc toons that me be easier to access.

Oh yeah. That guy has a few " utroms " there.
