Apparently, there was a post the second the character was revealed that said something to the extent of
"Of all the names you named him, you summoned THEM!" followed by nothing but Jojo memes.
Still, I get the suspicion they were going to name it LX-O or PX-R because of the obvious design reference, but that would have smacked of Disney Brand overload. All I know is, they made something even more adorable than BB-8, and the thing's already burning money in my pocket. Like, I want a little plastic D-O NOW!
