IDK ABOUT EASY i like him because he's a mess, puts himself above others, yet constantly hating and doubting on himself. although from rebuilds it was his fault that kaworu died, in the manga and anime it was the world being destroyed or kaworus death, at that time.
he represents a the weaker side of a person, the terrified and cynical part that a lot of ppl are ashamed of.
which makes it ironic that HE is the protagonist and humanitys "savior", but that makes it all the better

Sure, he is the MC, he is just a 14 yp woth more weight on his shoulders than we can actually imagine, but the way he became a useless lump of meat in EoE just was too much to bare

im not trying to give him cred for being the main, really ALL the characters in that series are p fucked up emotionally or mentally. it's just that a lot of the time shows dont portray such a stereotypical "weak" main character and even then it's rare to find them dealing with the issues in such a real way ?
but yeah dealing with all that jeez, but i dont believe he became useless in EOE, because really he was the one who decided to give humanity another chance in the end, rather than running away to an imaginary world, or becoming one and giving up everything he ever knew, he decided to continue forward, even though the end was hella tragic. unless you're referring to something else ? ?

I was referring to when the UN were storming geofront killing everyone and shinji couldn't even stand on his feet so Misato had to die because of him, then when Asuka was being slaughtered he again faggoted out and let her be ripped apart.

ahhhhhh, sorry. yea that was frustrating, but i guess it seemed so bleak at that point, i mean humans, what they didnt REALLY consider an enemy until that point [i mean most of them must have known it was coming, jeez], massacring the whole place and AFTER EVERYTHING ELSE, all those factors at that moment just caused that breakdown? however im not attempting to excuse his actions but i would be surprised if he did go, bcs USUALLY he only gets in the robot with an immense amount of pressure applied on him from others. and apparently he needed more than what was currently applied on him at that moment.
yeah god that was awful BUUUUUUT and i understand it's not the exact same BUUUT if you read the manga shinji was the most badass out of all 3 versions, he actually SAVED asuka, and other actions that were significantly more confident, like attempting punch his dad in the face.
