Description
Turns out the Toaster IS a girl afterall according to the director himself. One childhood mystery solved, plus bonus mind f*ck.But not really sure because when they are floating down the river, Kirby asks, "Where's Toaster?" And Lampy responds, "HE sank."

I think Toaster's a girl. Maybe the scene were Lampy said "he sank" was an error.

I know Jerry Rees said in an interview that Toaster WAS a girl, but Lampy DID say, "He sank." Leave it to Lampy assumes genders! For me, I just listen to the voice of said appliance. If they sound high in pitch - like the fan in B-Movie (Named Fannie in my Fanfictions) - I see them as a female. If they sound slightly masculine when speaking or have a deeper singing voice (For example, I decided Wattson, the 'Afro Lamp' from B-Movie, was a male since he was the only tenor when singing with Poppi (the Popcorn Popper) and Fannie), then I consider them a male. However, in the foreign dubs, particularly the first dub of the Brazilian Portuguese B-Movie, the Hanging Lamp (Who I named Phil in honor of his voice actor) is a female.
I think it is entirely up to the watcher's own decision to determine the gender of certain characters. However, Kirby is DEFINITELY not a girl!
I know this drawing was from the old Brave Little Toaster fandom, but Toaster looks great. I love this movie so much.

.....
Yeah, but it just sounds fair for toaster to have been something of a tomboyish girl that had enough leadership planning skills insight and direction to pull the other divided and otherwise bickering appliances into unity .... Probably had to act like a guy and the others figured she was one- but that tough act did harm to blankie in the first movie of which she soon after realized, and changed her tune, of which Lampy unconsciously recognized as different on more levels than he was even aware (toaster being a girl who is ultimately nurturing and actually has very real fears and vulnerabilities just like the rest ... Of which she didn't need to and couldn't show in the cottage out of nessesity and circumstance.)
We love toaster- though to be fair we wound need to get her a second name to do her more personalized justice and at the very least tell her apart from other toasters x)
Maybe..... Teresa....
Has a nice similairity to the word thermal while still being a name and references a wise loving leader by example
Seems to work, what u think?

Yes! The answer is revealed! My biggest child hood question was also toasters gender. I don't thing the writers were sure about toasters gender either...

I'm preeeeeeetty sure Toaster is a boy, considering the fact they always refer to the group as guys or fellas. Mainly because they would probably mention SOMETHING about Toaster being a girl, but they refer to Toaster as HE. Just sayin'.

When I was a little kid I always was like "SOOOOOOOO, is Toaster a girl or a boy? It SOUNDS like a girl, but I can't be sure."

I still think Toaster is a male, but I DO know that he's acted by Deanna Oliver!

I'm gonna say that "he sank" was either a typo or the scriptwriters weren't sure themselves at the time.

Eh, I say it's gender is open to interpretation. I used to think Toaster was a girl as a kid, but now I fully believe he's a guy. Doesn't really matter in the long run; toasters technically aren't supposed to have gender in the first place. XD

Yeah. At least with vaccum Kirby and even Blanket, it's obvious that they're boys (Kirby being a grumpy old codger and Blanket as an innocent--albeit annoying, when he's being a crybaby--kid). Same for Lampy and Radio (although Lampy's gender was changed to female in Spanish dubs, because "lamp" is a female-associated word in that language). But, Toaster is pure gender confusion, because it is voiced by a girl (Deanna Oliver, the same one who wrote a certain childhood movie alongside fellow Animaniacs! alumni Sherri "Slappy Squirrel" Stoner), yet the other appliances refer to it as a boy, yet it has somewhat motherly tendencies--especially whenever Lampy & Radio argue or just concerning Blanket in general, as he's the child of the group--and yet still, its sound is that of a prepubesant male in the source language (that being English). When asked about this, Dirsh--who wrote the novella that the movie's based on--had this to say: "Appliances have genders?" Granted, the story was written at a time when the traditional hero was a male, so the Toaster--as the main lead--was written as a male, yet even in the novel, its official gender was never truly specified, thus further confusing people.

Whoa really? I always thought he was a boy as a kid but later on I started to wonder XD I'm good with male, female, or androgynous toaster, ahaha!
...I am SO disappointed that this is being developed into a live action CGI hybrid remake ;_;

Same dude! Still a cute box of warms.
I know! It just sounds embarrassing with live-action. Idk. CGI, I get, but once you mix it with real people, idk, it seems like it can't be taken seriously. The story isn't meant for real actors!

You bet! And your human interpretation is adorable! I love it
Same, I would think it could fare fine if say, Pixar were to make a remake using CGI. But the new Alvin and the Chipmunks-style humor and execution...doesn't sit so well with me.

Thanks!
Yeah, I see what you mean. Movies like Alvin and the Chipmunks have a very pop-culture style of humor. TBLT has timeless-humor.
