Description
[3.500 words] [Unicorn-TF] [Unwilling] [Temporary]
On top of a mountain, existed a monastery. There, one could find humans, elves, kobolds, halflings, and all types of creatures, lured from all across the world for the sake of research. One of the most esteemed members of that place was Karla, a human researcher with a profound fascination for ancient magic, sometimes called archaenaeneology. (Or “Arcanalogy” for short)
Most would feel claustrophobic in her little study-room, a treasure trove cluttered with dusty tomes, scrolls, and artifacts from all ages, each waiting to be deciphered by her. On that particular day, she would analyze the latest item on her list — a peculiar book titled 'Unicorn Magic, A Primer.'
Even though she had to translate a box full of books till the end of that month, and that unicorn book was not one of them, she was so entranced by its mystery that she couldn’t contain herself.
“The secrets of an extinct race…” She smiled. “Let’s see if the unicorns were yet another civilization destroyed by their own power.”
The book emanated an aura of mystery and power that drew her in like a moth to a flame. She had found it a week ago in a nearby archaeological site, a ruined library under kilometers of snow. That book was one of the few who appeared intact even under those harsh conditions, as if magic was used in its making.
The tome had a dark purple cover, crafted from a material similar to a bug’s carapace. On the cover, the silhouette of a unicorn painted itself, with a flowing mane like a fuzzy waterfall and a horn atop the head that pointed to a crescent moon.
The pages lacked the usual roughness of paper; instead, they featured the texture of a thin piece of fabric made of intertwined horse's mane. All these enigmatic qualities were precisely why she loved her field.
Her heart accelerated and her hands trembled as she cracked open the aged parchment. The scent of old magic permeated the air, a potent and tantalizing aroma that carried both promise and peril. In her line of work, ancient tomes were as treacherous as they were powerful. Many fellow researchers had found themselves burned, frozen, obliterated, or turned mad while casually exploring those arcane relics. The blowing up of heads could be both figurative and literal.
“What can you tell me?” She whispered into the book. “Don’t hold out on me. I must extract every bit of information from you… and if you are nice, we can do it the easy and painless way.”
The book was a labyrinth of runes and riddles in the form of drawings that seemed designed to test the reader's intellect and will before unveiling the next page. But Karla remained undaunted. Her arms and legs tingled with the familiar thrill of adventure. What mysteries lay within? Could they be a portal to another world? A key to unlocking antediluvian magic? A secret incantation capable of summoning forgotten Daemons? The meaning of 42? It could be anything…
A wordless book was quite a challenge. The author, whoever it was, had resorted to filling the pages with diagrams, constellations, runes, and mathemagics to directly represent what it wanted. Perhaps its information simply could not be aptly communicated in words. It didn’t even feel like Karla was reading it. The sensation was akin to peeking into the blueprints of magic itself.
…And that only excited her more. She delved deeper, working through the night to decipher the ancient drawings and assemble the puzzle. She had even cast a spell on her bladder and bowels to make sure no bodily function would disturb her work. It wouldn't be the first time she skipped meals and disregarded bedtime during an exploration. Once her mind was focused on something, she didn’t want any sort of distraction.
Even though Karla had to prepare herself for giving a lecture the next morning, she knew that it would be impossible to rest before unveiling that mysterious book. When something got into her head, there was no easy way to get it out. Besides, a good amount of coffee would hopefully help her during the class.
One might assume that Karla's body suffered under such relentless stress, but the reality was quite the opposite. With each riddle solved, each rune deciphered, and each hidden meaning revealed, a rush of power coursed through the researcher’s veins, invigorating her and providing the energy to persist. It made her grin with something comparable to an alchemist finding a new element. It was as though a joyous celebration raged beneath her skin, offering a bliss that surpassed any mundane pleasure.
However, as time passed, her arms grew stiffer than usual, and even the simple act of turning the pages became cumbersome. The once-comfortable chair now felt like a torturous contraption, compelling Karla to stand up, keeping her buttocks slightly raised in a desperate attempt to alleviate the discomfort. Her body seemed to carry an inexplicable weight, forcing her to hunch over the table and place both hands on its surface for support. But she huffed, and kept reading.
The very fabric of her clothes seemed to conspire against her, and in response, she cast a quick spell that transformed them into a light, stretchable silk. Yet, even this didn't bring the relief she sought. Her growing unease made her resort to constantly wiggling, until it caused some clothes to tear in response.
Karla was so concentrated on the book that she didn’t notice the real causes of those distractions. Although, maybe, she did notice, but her mind simply chose to ignore it, just like she ignored the need to eat, sleep and drink. What was really going on was that, with each riddle solved and each deciphered the image, her own body morphed.
First her hair, once a flowing mess of chestnut locks that coiled like snakes about themselves, lengthened and shimmered with a pink sheen, becoming a lustrous, ethereal mane that framed her face and cascaded down her now slightly longer neck. Each strand resonated like the strings of a magical instrument… like the threads of destiny itself.
Her arms became much bulkier, and her hands, once dexterous and delicate, began to bulk into polished hooves, solid and sturdy. Girly fingers and bitten nails merged and elongated into sleek, ivory appendages. The sensation of touch became more acute, and she could feel the very pulsation of the earth through her new extremities. She attuned to the natural rhythms of the world.
Next, her once tiny face elongated, merging lips and nose into a single thing, giving rise to a long, round muzzle. She even released a pleasant neigh as her tongue got more space to wiggle. She briefly took note of how the snout blocked her lower view of the page, but adjusted and kept going without a care.
Her eyes transformed into pools of liquid emerald that held the wisdom of ages, swirling around as the contents of the book reflected in those dreary irises. Her field of view widened and she was presented to a realm of colors and patterns previously unseen. She could discern the subtlest nuances of magic that hid from her before. New details popped up all over the pages… details that mere human eyes couldn’t comprehend.
Her petit ears had also stretched out and shifted into horse-like ones, tapering to delicate points, perceptive and attuned to the slightest whisper of magic in the breeze. Those ears made her aware of a distant melody coming from somewhere within the book, like a chanting of a forgotten ritual. She could also hear a slow breathing from the pages, as well as an ethereal heartbeat.
What fascinated her most, however, were those appendages’ newfound freedom. Unlike her human ears, which remained fixed, her new ones could pivot in any direction, seeking out the enchanting melodies of the natural world. With a simple flicker up and down, she could attune her ears only to the sounds of the book, while ignoring everything else.
“Nnnngh!” Karla shivered as her coccyx moved an inch, but didn’t lose focus.
A luxurious, silken tail, adorned with pink strands, emerged from the base of her spine, easily ripping the seat of her pants. It shimmered as if the heavens themselves were imbued in its smooth strands. The sensation as it unfurled was akin to pulling something out from her very core, as if she was made of clay. As the countless fine hairs brushed against her inner buttocks, Karla giggled at such a caress in her private regions.
Still, her tail was not just elegant and almost royal-like; it served a practical purpose as well. It provided her with a newfound sense of balance, not only to keep her physical body poised but also to stabilize her spirit against the magical currents that suddenly felt a lot more present than ever before. It perked up and swished.
“Ah…” Her eyes twitched and a moan escaped her lips.
Right under her tail, striking right at her sensitive area, another change occurred. A wave of heat rushed over her and Karla’s cheeks turned red. Her thoughts were interrupted for only a brief instant, as she fantasized about exchanging noserubs with a shiny unicorn. She wished to know him more… Learn what it had to teach… Gallop together under the moonlight… Rest her head over his flank… Be the mother of his foals and keep them fed with- Karla shook her head. She would deal with those lascive thoughts later…
She took a deep breath and dived back into the book…
Her skin, once uncared for and lacking sunlight, suddenly became a lush coat of glistening fur, perfectly trimmed and brushed. To the touch, it was exquisitely soft, far superior to any clothing she had ever worn. And more beautiful than the hide of any horse that grazed in the capital city, let alone any that ever saw that little mountaintop monastery. For the first time in her life, she was “wearing” something that didn’t make her uncomfortable.
The fur also possessed the quality of a protective barrier, not only against the chill of the night but also as against malign magic. Like an enchanted Armor against malevolent forces. It was as if the very essence of the wild magic was woven into each hair.
Her once weak chest barreled-out, gaining a burst of muscles and extra ribs. The same happened to each of her arms and legs, which widened and rushed with vigor. Even her boring ass tripled in size and roundness, to a point where she could crack macadamia nuts with her buttcheeks.
She no longer felt like an indoor creep, but something full of stamina, capable of running for days without rest… preferably while also reading a book. She whinnied.
Finally, the most important – a single horn protruded from her forehead, announcing itself with a distinct reflection of the oncoming light down into her eyes. It coiled into a spiral shape, rounded like the roots of a tree. Its white, alabaster shape was less pointed than one would expect, with a sharpness that could probably be outdone by a carrot. It shimmered with an otherworldly radiance, pulsing with the potent magic.
This horn was a direct extension of her very mind and soul, an intricate link to her core. Karla’s thoughts connected to the horn, as if it contained her very spirit. It pulsed with each brilliant inkling she had. With it, she could channel the magic of the cosmos, bending reality to her will and weaving enchantments into existence.
Yet the horn was not just a conduit for magic; it was also a sixth sense, unveiling the magical signatures of her surroundings. When she pointed it into a nearby plant, she could feel the life force flowing from its roots into its leaves. When she pointed it toward the window and into the night sky, she could sense the celestial patterns and the ebb and flow of the stars' arrangements.
Karla soon discovered that the horn allowed her to communicate on an intimate level with everything, bringing a deeper understanding of the unseen forces at play, including the secrets of the very book in front of her. It was a tool of knowledge and power, a conduit to the mysteries of the universe.
Symbols that once made no sense finally connected. Runes that she hadn’t even noticed before now appeared with less discreteness than a jam stain in a white dress. The book expanded into a new astral plane. She didn’t even have to turn the pages anymore. For a brief moment, reading that book was akin to speaking with another person…
The book was breathing…
The book had a heartbeat…
The book sang a melody…
The book was a lock and her horn was a key…
One might assume that Karla would have noticed all these remarkable changes by then. Any “normal” person would’ve taken a moment to look down at themselves, notice their fluffy tail, and remark or freak out at the fact that they had completely turned into a unicorn. Karla, however, was so utterly fixated in her reading that those peculiar occurrences felt like mere figments of her imagination, tricks played by the arcane, or figurative interpretations that her mind was crafting. Any warnings she’d previously heard about cursed tomes were thrown right out the window at that moment.
After all, it was quite easy to forget who one was when reading a good book. More than anything, her shifting fueled her determination, for she believed that feeling like another creature was a sign of her proximity to unlocking the book's deepest mysteries.
The reality of her situation only became clear once her big hooves, pressing down upon the table, caused it to creak. She leaned forward, and with a crack, her oversized, equine body caused it to break in half.
Karla dropped onto all fours with a resounding 'clop,' the once-sturdy desk reduced to shattered wood. The book of unicorn magic rested on the floor between her two front hooves. In fact, she could only see half of the book, since her long muzzle obstructed part of the view. She blinked a few times, unsure about what had just happened.
Desperation gripped her. She tried to move her right arm — or what used to be her arm — and that hoof moved up and down, silently obeying her unspoken command. She repeated the movement with her left arm and then her feet, each hoof responding with uncanny accuracy.
If those appendages moved when she tried to move her human body, and she could feel the blood flowing through her appendages… her researcher brain began to form a hypothesis.
The full realization of her state dawned upon Karla once she raised her head to a nearby mirror. What she expected to see was the familiar face of a sleep-deprived woman with messy hair and a confident smirk, but instead, a unicorn stared back at her with eyes wide in shock and disbelief. She cocked her head to the side, and that unicorn did as well.
A long, scared neigh escaped her throat, replacing the gasp of horror she had intended. Her hypothesis was starting to seem a lot more real. She had fully become a unicorn, except, hopefully, for her mind.
When did that happen?
Had she forgotten to check the book for traps and curses?
When had she become so careless?
Her mind flipped - it couldn’t be her fault!
Transformation magic was thought to be a thing of old legends!
Transformation wasn’t meant to be possible!
She attempted to recite curse-breaking incantations, her mind racing to find a solution. However, to her dismay, no human words came out. No matter how hard she tried, only neighs, grunts, and ruffs echoed in her room. How was a seasoned sorceress supposed to cast magic without words?
Panic set in, mixed with fear and regret. She had screwed up big time. Years of study had caused her to lower her guard, and now her own carelessness had trapped her in a voiceless body. Over and over she winnied to no avail, like a horse tied to a pole during a wildfire. The once-mighty sorceress was now at a loss, her magical knowledge useless in her current form.
What if she was stuck like that forever? The other researchers would spot a random, long-extinct species at the monastery and be ecstatic by the chance to study it. All of her friends would be brushing her fur and petting her mane and talking to her, all the while she’d be helpless to tell them it was her! She just traded her life of research to one as the subject! She just-
“Easy, my dear,” a soothing, masculine whisper resonated inside the room, brushing off the chaos that swirled in her thoughts. “Calm down. You should be celebrating, not hyperventilating! Ha ha ha ha ha, neigh!”
Karla's eyes darted around the room, trying to locate the source of the message, but it remained elusive. Maybe she was losing her mind. The possibility gnawed at her, for she had always wondered how long it would take for her to join the ranks of the mad wizards who lived in secluded towers, studying things beyond belief. Could it all be a dream? Perhaps she had spent so much time immersed in that book that she had fallen asleep on top of it. Right? Right? Right!?
"Congratulations, Karla," the voice returned, both soothing and commanding. "You have completed the primer and demonstrated your worthiness. Rejoice, for you are my new unicorn student!”
“What!?” She tried to say, though it came out as an equine grunt.
“You have been accepted to your new education! Millions have applied but only you were chosen!”
She breathed heavily, raising a hoof to her mouth. This couldn’t be real. She had to be imagining it. Right?... But why did her hooves feel so real, and why were so many strange sensations flowing through her horn whenever she pointed it at different objects throughout the room? How could she imagine this?
Tears welled up in Karla's eyes, both in her thoughts and the corners of her new unicorn eyes. If it was real, she mentally implored, "Please, I want to go back to being human. I never signed up for this!"
“Such ingratitude!” The ethereal voice grew more resonant. “I hope you find the changes I’ve made to your body quite helpful for learning the new types of magic I'm about to share with you. That ridiculous human shape was as good as a hollow horn."
“Wh-when will…” Karla's four legs trembled, as well as her thoughts, “Wh-when will you change me back? I can't perform any magic like this! I can't allow others to see me in this state! I have a class of students to lecture the next morning! I have a schedule to fulfill! The monastery wants me to translate a dozen more books this month!”
The bodiless voice sighed, then continued. "You will have your human form back once you have completed my work. That is if you still want to inhabit that pathetic, maneless vessel, of course." He stated. "You are now my apprentice, a position widely-sought, and deserving of utmost gratitude. Together, we shall finish the last section of the book you were reading. The final puzzle I wasn’t able to solve before… my unfortunate demise…"
“And… how exactly did you meet your untimely end?” Karla was beginning to regain her composure. The entity had assured her that the changes were reversible, so it was a wise decision to befriend him and work together if she ever wanted her body again. “That is, if you don't mind sharing.”
“Well, you see...” The voice suddenly sounded embarrassed and almost bashful. “I was so engrossed in completing my research that I... erm... forgot to eat and sleep… for a month or so…"
Karla blinked, taken aback by the admission.
“Excuse me?” She thought, her surprise apparent in her mental voice.
“It’s hard to focus on mundane matters like food when you're immersed in the wonders of magic,” he explained. “I had a magnum opus to complete!”
The two of them fell into a brief, contemplative silence. Then, an unexpected sound erupted — the rumbling of Karla's empty stomach and a very long yawn… both at the same time.
In that moment, the sound of their shared laughter resonated inside Karla's head. A smile formed in her unicorn lips, and the tip of her horn produced tiny sparks of joy.
Karla had found a friend that was as much an oddball as herself.
