Description This is the skull deer character requested by a friend. It is an altered version of my deer pattern to represent the long lean character its based on. The only thing I'm not happy with is the antlers, they are way to fluffy for this project but they were the only kind left at Hobby Lobby. My friend says its fine though he loves all of it.

The character is named Fever. Fever is a sort of Helldeer if you can call it that. The 'pet' of the grim reaper sent to create a sickness among the people he touches. So that when they are dead the reaper may take them. Fever wears a skull mask that fits over his 'blood bone' antlers. His hooves are made of a material that heats up when he is angry and glow a bright red. Along with his hooves is the fur of his tail which turns a bright red when he infects you. Within days you die from an intense fever, from which he is named.

Fever had long skinny legs like they were just barely skin and bone but the lower part was furry. I brushed the yarn to get the effect on the legs and the neck. Fever had 3 versions it could turn into with similar coloring; a fox, a deer, and a dragon. The deer version is the favorite and the one represented here.

The eyes are the same as the other deer except I painted them red. The skull was the hardest thing to do. I HATE felt with a passion. Its itchy and weird and gets fluff everywhere. Luckily after I got the shape I wanted down I found some stiff felt that would hold its shape. It didn't fray and did much better than regular felt.

That’s about it. Hope you like it, he was a lot of fun to make!

Thank you so much! He was very fun to work on. His skull was a challenge especially since I had to figure out how to turn a flat felt skull into a 3D one that would fit this particular deer lol

Wow, this looks really awesome! If you don't mind me asking, and I apologize if this has already been asked, how did you manage those legs? Are they supported with wire? And how would you get the wire not to poke through the body? Thanks!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pickleweasel360 In reply to MilesofCrochet [2012-05-09 21:20:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! I don't think anyone has asked but I like all kinds of comments so it would have been ok either way. I put wire through the enitre thing while I'm sewing the legs on, I'm sure there are better ways to do it but this is working for me. I attatch the head to the neck and then run a wire from the mouth to the end of the body so all of it is posable. After that I pin the legs on to make sure they all are even and look good where they are. The body is spred out so I can roughly messure how long to make the wire.

I lay the body our like this -0- and lay the wire across about the same lenght and cut it. Then I mark where the center of the leg is with a pin and take the legs off. I poke the wire into the body at the first point out out the other side at the other pin. Then I slip both legs on to see how much extra wire I have. Usually it is just enough to twist up at the end and pinch with tools. I take the legs back off and pinch the ends. I do that so that the wire doesn't poke out of the bottom. Then I slip the legs back on and sew them to the body. After that I bend the wire down at the spot the leg attatches so that it will keep the position and keep the body with constant.

The back legs are the hardest because I don't put the wire into the top I go in from the side. The steps are about the same except I put the wire in first without measuring. I do pin the legs on and mark where the wire should enter. I poke the wire through the leg and see where the end comes out. Instead of taking it back off to cut it I slip the leg up and bend the wire and push the leg back over the bent part of the wire. Because the stitches are tight it would be harder to get the wire through it if I did it like the front pair. Then I bend them down like the front pair and then I'm done.

Sorry its so long but thats pretty much it, it might be a little confusing but that's probably my fault. I'm more of a visual teacher haha. Hope it helps!

No, I appreciate the lengthy response! That's really fantastic, I love the whole concept. I'll have to toy around with using wire, it opens up a ton of possibilities. Thanks!

Will do! Oh, and might I ask, what sort of wire do you use? Like, what's a good thickness?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pickleweasel360 In reply to MilesofCrochet [2012-05-14 20:45:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure exactly what guage wire it is. It is on a coil that had a sticker telling that but I got it a few years ago. It is aluminum and if I had to guess 18 or 16 guage. It is much thicker than pipe cleaners and beading wire. Basically it is thick enough to hold its shape when inside the animals. It also has to be thick enough to withstand a lot of bending. Anywire will break if bent repeatedly in the same spot. I don't bend them over and over very fast, mostly for the next pose to put them in, so they will last a long time.

Pipe cleaners are certianly the fastest and cheapest way to wire them, but they wont hold the shape you have placed them in very well. I have twisted 3 or 4 pipe cleaners together to make the stronger, but it still is not as good as the thicker wire. That is how I did the blue monkeys tail, but it was just so it would hold some sort of a shape. It wasn't enough to wrap around anything and hang from it, but it was going to sit on a shelf it wouldn't be used like the deer so that was ok.

Hope it helps!

I LOVE it.

I actually like the red fuzzy wire antlers, too!

Did you know that when deer go into Rut, they get fuzzy red fur on their antlers?

Because the Rut is when they will battle each other with their horns.

The red fuzz has vitamins in it that helps their horns get hard, so they won't get hurt when they Rut!

So I like that the Deer you made has fuzzy red antlers!

I did know that they have the fuzzy on the antlers when they start, velvet I believe.
I should have taken pictures of my other buck fighting with this one! Why didn't I do that! Next time I make a buck I so will take more action pictures.

I like the fuzzy antlers too they are just even more fuzzy than the other buck, plus it makes it look less scary so thats why I wished I could have got the less fuzzy version.

I think the "extra fuzz" makes him look even more mature...almost more dominant...Maybe he needs more velvet (yup, you're right, that's what's it's called, thanks!) ... because maybe he's older, or maybe he's won so many battles that he has scars...?

That would be a really cool photo! You bet! The fighting stags... Good luck! :3

The character is supposed to be like the grim reapers pet so he probably is really old too. He probably has fought a lot of battles. It would be interesting to try to put scars on him. I wonder how it would work trying to put that into yarn.

I have a few other projects in line but after I finish them I think I will make another set of deer just for that!

I'm gonna be starting a project soonish ^^

I've done a few mock-up articulated dolls, I make them with cheap clay.

I want to start making some with air-drying porcelain! That way, they won't crack and break like my clay ones will.

I can't paint the dolls, though, but a friend of mine can, so that's nice!

Articulated dolls are called BJDs -- which means they are ball-jointed dolls. You hear about ABJDs a lot these days, which means that the BJDs are Asian and made of resin.

I felt it would be nice to see some China BJDs, so I'mma investing in the air drying China Porcelain soon ^^

I want to make lottttsss of dolls soon and give them to my friends! Kind of like a Promotion! :3 Maybe in the future I'll sell them, but I'm not really good with businesses

About the scars...because you use Yarn, I wonder...could you needle-felt the yarn to make scars? Because you could control how thick or how thin the scar is, and also, you could bend it/move it a little bit....

Like, someone who had been in a fire could have a different kind of scar than someone who had been bitten by a dog, so it'd be helpful to use felting so you could make the "right" sort of scar, you know? ^^

I'm not sure how one would purchase felting needles for such tiny toys, but I'm sure somewhere there are small felters? I don't felt myself, but I'm utterly fascinated by the process ^_-

Pickleweasel360 In reply to savagedolls [2012-05-08 06:58:38 +0000 UTC]

I have always liked things that could be articulated, my favorite toys as a kid were the ones that could be moved. I used to do a lot with clay, mostly animals. I don't know what it is about humans that puzzle me so. I can't sculpt or draw a decent human. I guess because they are always supposed to look like someone, and if they don't I feel like I failed at it. Maybe one day I will get back into it. I really wish I could so I could draw people from me and my friends favorite show Supernatural.

You sculpt these dolls so well. I know what you mean about giving them away. My friend has like 7 of my animals, I rarely sell something and when I do I always feel like I over charge so I end up not making any profit from them. They take so long I should charge a lot but then you eliminate a lot of people who would want to buy them. Not everyone can drop 50+ on a toy these days. I know I dont. Besides, my friend always appreciates them more when they are gifts, that way they know we care about them. Hey, if you do get to making more dolls, would you be interested in an art trade? I have been thinking a lot about doing that with someone but I dont know of what I would want to trade.

I actually have a needle felting pen I love needle felted animals they can give more realistic apperances than crochet and are even more posable. The supplies are what cost so much though wool is apparently very expensive. They say you can 'felt' crochet things like this after they are done but I would be afraid it would get messed up. I would hate to put all the work into it and them mess it up. Maybe on a smaller project I will try it. This guy isnt that little actually, from hoof to antler he is about a 12 inches tall. The fawn in my deer family is almost as tall as a can of coke. I wish I could use super tiny yarn but it is really hard or at least I think so.

I think i will try to add things like scars/wounds in the future. My friend suggested doing to Four Horses of the Apocalypse, it would be awesome since I love the TV show Supernatural. Even though they had cars on the show I still would always think of them. Death's horse would look awesome all zombied out.

OH! I thought you made those haha. Whoopsie

I have never used that before only red clay and gray ceramic clay, it seems like a delicate medium though. I know the finished pieces break easy. That is awesome you can make your own clay! We always bought our premade.

It does sound aweomse I started doodling some design ideas in my sketchbook. It will be a while though I'm so busy right now. One day though! One day! Thanks for the good luck
