By the beginning of 2014 I started this account and uploaded a doodle a day during a year. It was the most challenging thing I ever did and it helped me loads on improving my art.
I've seen a lot of mentions on my inbox about artists that are starting their own 365 Days challenge and I want to write this journal to share what I've learned through my experience and maybe encourage some of you to join this long term journey.
It's okay to start simple!
My first doodles were waaay more simple than the other ones. If I had to start the project again I would still do them simple. Of course, starting this challenge is very exciting but it's a dead end if you put a heavy load on yourself at the beginning!
Focus on knowing your pace first. How much time does it take you to finish your drawings?
Stay original
On my first 60 days I preferred to stay away from fan art and draw original themes only. That way I could develop a style and gain confidence on what I was doing.
I know this "fan art VS original art" has been discussed about a bazillion times here on deviantART and it's not like I don't enjoy making tributes to my favorite things but looking back at the project the original doodles have a bigger impact on me than the fan arts.
Fan Arts
If you still want to make fan arts: go for it, they're delicious to make! Put your favorite characters into themed series like a Halloween compilation, for instance. Just make sure to add your own spin on them!
Routine
Remember that drawing now has become a part of you, it is as daily as brushing your teeth. You're making it into a habit . One of the main flaws of my 365 days challenge was drawing it in random periods of the day then starting to draw on late nights. That made me confused about which day I was submitting and I had to make up for the late doodles in the end.
Try your best to keep a routine. It can be early morning or late night, it's important to be continuous.
Ideas
People ask me all the time about where do I get my ideas.
Putting a year into perspective one of the most important things for me was to write my ideas . Any of them. A prompt, an inspiring quote or word. Anything. Even if I don't use them immediately, the ideas "grow" in my head and may be drawn in the future. Keeping track of your ideas also helps if you're out of inspiration and have to draw the daily drawing.
Surround yourself with inspiring websites, the internet is yours to rule! dA, Pixiv, Behance and Tumblr are my friends whenever I'm out of ideas to draw. Music is also responsible for keeping me inspired everyday.
Just keep eyes and ears open, inspiration WILL come.
Reference
Many fellow deviants are against the use of reference but I find them extremely helpful when I'm trying to draw something new.
Referencing from another drawing is great but you have to keep in mind that it's another artist's view on something. I strongly recommend the use of photo reference as it helps you to put your own spin on reality. That can also improves your skill when drawing from observation!
Will Terrel has a terrific video explaining how to draw from drawing reference. Check it out: [link]
The last drawing
Prepare some buckets because if you reach this point you'll cry. A lot.
That's all for now guys, hope that these hints are helpful even if you're not trying the 365 Days challenge. I'm preparing some drawing related tutorials soon to explain other stuff in detail (:
Wish you all the best of luck on your upcoming drawings. May 2015 be an inspiring year!

It's NEVER to late to start drawing, there are tons of different challenges you could do, like 30-day challenge, Alphabet-challange, 1 drwing-a-week-challenge..OR you just make up for the days that has already passed this year (since we havn't got so far yet) and pretty much just get to it. Good Luck!

Hello there! You have inspired me to do the 365 day challenge in 2016. ^-^ The thing is... I'm currently a terrible artist. There's not much I can draw. I don't know anatomy so I can't draw bodies AT ALL, only faces (and barely that), I don't have a style... So not only will I be creating 1 drawing per day, but on TOP of that, I somehow have to also make time to learn anatomy and technique and perspective and all that, because I really want my drawings not to be utter crap... The idea of this seems very overwhelming. Do you have any tips for how to manage this?? It would be much appreciated!

Draw things from real life, either set up a still life or look at photographs online, break it down into basic shapes and try not to look at what it actually is. Turn it upside down and draw it that way if you have to. If you draw every day, you won't notice the improvement until you look back at the end of the year. Don't look at any of the previous day's drawings until the end, THEN you'll notice the difference. Don't get discouraged anddont give up

I love your work and am amazed at how you were able to do the 365 day challenge. Always makes me happy when I see you've posted something new. You are a very talented artist and I cannot wait to see what you draw next.
Just a quick question, as you drew everyday, did you notice your pace begin to increase or in other words, did you get faster at creating each drawing? I know it might vary between projects but just an overall idea would be nice. I'm trying to do inktober to see if I can do a 365 day challenge but notice it takes me quite a while to finish drawing and inking a small picture.

Oh, and one more question (sorry for the long comments...), when I ink my drawing on moleskin the pen bleeds onto the other side. I place a piece of printer paper in between each page but was wondering if you still used the back of your moleskin pages even if you saw ink marks from the previous page and edited those areas digitally or did you skip pages? Which would you recommend?

Hallo
Picolo-kun uses a Pentel mechanical pencil to sketch the drawings out, I'm not 100% sure which one he uses but I don't suppose it makes that much of a difference, this one matches the image he has on his profile:
www.tigerpens.co.uk/pentel-twi…
or cheaper:
www.tigerpens.co.uk/pentel-twi…
That store has international shipping so that might help.
Or try here:
www.pentel.co.uk/where-to-buy.…
www.cultpens.com/c/q/brands/pe…
There's often a £10 charge for international orders though.
For the pens, he uses a Staedtler pigment pen. They can be found here:
www.cultpens.com/i/q/SD01956/s…
or:
www.ebay.in/itm/STAEDTLER-PIGM…
Sorry this is so long Hope for the best, the two pieces in your gallery look great ^-^

Since I've started watching you (I think it was towards the end of your 365 challenge), seeing that one and the colour palette challenge and other amazing artists doing similar challenges, I felt so inspired to do it too! And now I finally started, at least one drawing per day for at least a year (because I could see myself making the next year more challenging). It's day 3 today, and I anticipate tomorrow so that I can do the next one (I know I could draw more today, but my arm and thumb hurt X( ).
I just want to say thank you! <3
Keep up the amazing and imspiring work that you do, and thanks so much for sharing it with us!
I have only one question (for obvious reasons): did you hurt your drawing hand or arm during the challenge? Maybe even because of using it too much for drawing? How did you cope?
And to everyone else reading this: try the challenge, it's awesome!

Hey man.
I'm kinda new with all these digital art thing... So I was thinking about making my studies with something resembling watercolour.
The question is How do I manage that?
All the tutorials I have found so far don't give that watercoloury feeling. I understand if you don't want to reveal your technique but at the very least could
you help me walk in the right direction?
Anyway Thx a lot for sharing your work and inspiring us all.

I can vouch that you will definitely cry when you finish No.365 (through sheer shock if nothing else haha) - but! the 'journey' is worth it - if you're like me and you think badly about your own work - if this challenge doesn't improve the drawing you do everyday then nothing will. Though if you're taking a drawing challenge you might want to start small, then again your head might say go big or go home xD Great advice and work as per usual!

i was thinking of starting to do this this year, but the way i wanted to start it didnt work out so i didnt get to do it. so, i have to ask, how exactly do you do it??? is it one peice a day only??? do you only draw these in a specific book??? do we just make up our own with the limit of drawing one thing a day at least? or is there a theme, as in drawing something representing that day???
also, if we wanted to start it past the year, would that be ok???
