Description
paper collage28" x 22"
Fall 2002
© Joseph Christian
"How You are Feeling" was my first full-size collage and a very personal representation of mood and mind. This piece evolved organically from a few figures interacting with their environment into a sprawling labyrinth with dozens of hidden pictures. Look closely- you may discover a few.

Some materials used in this work were derived from various magazine sources, perhaps including, but not exclusive to; National Geographic, National Geographic Travel, Architectural Digest, Outside, Smithsonian, In Style, Playboy, Transworld, Reader's Digest, Sailing, Sports Illustrated, Field & Stream, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Skateboarder, American Hunter, and American Rifleman.
I have altered, rearranged, and transformed the fragments of photographs and advertisements published in these magazines in a way inconsistent with their original context, focus, and arrangement, so that any derivative use qualifies as
de minimus, and therefore does not infringe on any copyright. Additionally, some elements may have been appropriated and recontextualized, qualifying as fair use.

Thanks. Yeah, it's the first one I ever did, so I spent the most time on it.

Wow! I adore this one! It's so interesting, and there are so many different ways to look at it! The only thing that I would critique it on is that sometimes the eye needs a place to rest, and there is SO much awesomeness going on here that I got really dizzy trying to look at everything. However this can be fun/good too because every time I look at it I notice something that I didn't see before!
In any case, awesome piece! I really like it!

Thanks. Yeah, there really is no way for the eye to focus - I had no plan for the end result when I started this one. It just sort of grew out of a few fragments.

This is an awesome collage because you can break it up into pieces and or look at it as a whole. There are so many layers and I like that. Cool.

i use fragments of photos from various magazines so long as the original focus of the photo is not apparent in my design. Some sources I've used are national geographic, skateboarder, smithsonian, outside, in style, vogue, architecture digest, sports illustrated, playboy, and marvel comics.
