Hello everyone!What you see here is an animation test I've been working on and off on for the past month. The goal here for me was to help with animating characters and objects as fluently as possible, along with helping to develop the design of some of my original characters some more. Although Mark (the young boy that for some reason has a circle for a head) and Flops (the walking, talking rabbit) are not that complicated to draw, it does allow for me to easily play around with how characters move a bit more since they're really basic designs to begin with.
Also, I plan to be using this animation among others while I'm trying to decide whether to change my major at my school to animation instead of computer science. So, if you have ANY suggestions on how I could improve this animation, my art style or anything else I may have submitted, please sound them out and I'll be happy to hear and consider them. If any of you animators out there had any suggestions, tips, advice or even warnings that you could give a guy wanting to pursue animation as a career, please let me know of those as well through a comment or even a note. All the help I can get to improve is priceless to me right now, as I'm still weary as to what to do with my major at college.
One last thing for anyone curious: this runs at 30 Frames Per Second, and all of this is frame-by-frame animation (except for the doors in the intro).

The lip synch, a small bit. There are parts where your subject's mouth is very wide-open for spoken lines that don't sound like they're being spoken that way.
That sounds vague, right?
Have you heard of 'hearing a smile'? Sometimes you can hear it over the phone, whether people are smiling or not, because of the way the words come out. Have a friend say something to you in a normal tone (without actually looking at them); then have them say the exact, same thing, while smiling. Even though you aren't looking at them, you can still hear a difference in the way it comes out.
Otherwise, you're a great with fluid motion and expressions. I'd suggest going for animation, with the vast potetntial you have for it!

Funny thing is, we were just talking about this in my Psychology of Language class at college: how one can tell the true mood of a person just by listening to how they speak, regardless of if it's over the phone or in person. I've been finding that class really interesting, even for my animations.
Anyway, I agree: some parts of the lip-sync could use some fine-tuning. One of the other suggestions I got was to simply say a line in front of a mirror while smiling (since Mark seems to smile a lot in this cartoon) and look at my lips while the word is being said. With all of the excellent suggestions I've been getting to improve this simple animation, I'm very much considering going back to this and implementing the suggestions in an updated version. Since I'll be showing this around along with the Sonic Short, it'll probably be worth it.

I remember seeing one of those 'behind the scenes' animation studio videos when I was little, that talked about using mirrors while animating lip motions. It's something the pros do.

I've actually been looking around for a small mirror I could use when I'm animating lip-sync and facial expressions, as that would be a lot more convenient instead of having to stand in front of a bathroom mirror all the time.
And sure, just stay tuned! It's a great morale booster whenever a fellow artist tags along to see my work.

This ran at 30 fps. It's not 24 fps (which I'm guessing is standard), but it allows for more fluid animation, so I've been starting to make it a habit for myself to animate at that speed.
