So this is their third serious Conversation, innit. Third time pays for all....
(I suppose I should stop implicitly contradicting Sarah's profession that other people matter tooΒ and remember there are other residents in this Building, huh?
Maybe not just quite yet though.)

*Ahem* now that that's done: Pika, you've done it again. Β This is so spectacularly well-written and the art is perfect. Β Sarah's issues are very real and very complex and she's articulating them beautifully. Β And Jareth's line in panel 7... it sent chills down my spine. Β The implied imagery is very vivid, he can play such a cruel villain and that dark shadow around him recalls it. Β I can't wait to see what happens next... will they actually get down to the nitty gritty of making this weird dynamic they have into a real relationship, or will the Fail FieldTM reappear and fuck them both over? Β Or will they be halfway through "working things out" and like the blikkens show up to stage a coup? Β Who knows? Β Pika knows! Β And whatever comes next, I'm HERE FOR THIS!!!

I just... I want to unscrew the top of his head and see how his mind works. What exactly about her does he want so very badly? What has anchored his heart in this way? Does *he* even know?

Would you rather delight in that mystery or get insights into how I see it?
Did I have this discussion with you or others? I mean, besides the given that Fae creatures don't really do emotions by halves... with Jareth it also has to do with his personal aspirations to escape his role - rolling with some semi-canon comments of Bowie's, you know, how he thinks the GK was doing the Goblin-ruling job unwillingly and "would rather be in Soho", and the general weary bitterness that leaks through some moments. I mean, shipping goggles and PG-limitations aside, Jareth isn't pure gleeful/glacial villainy like ....some (rhymes with "mum"). The way I see it, he was intrigued by Sarah's bold assertions that "the king of the goblins had fallen in love with the girl", and went along with the motions for the amusing novelty of it, except creatures who deal in illusions and glamours should be careful playing really-pretends and he got in too deep. And in that whole confusing mess that ensued he caught sight of something he realised he *wants* - only villains do not get what they want, unless - the trump card to Screw Destiny, in alllllllll the stories, is always True Love. Hence, Sarah becomes the means AND the end to him.
+ "fangirls masquerading as Fate" and all that meta shipping pressure, if you're gonna question the levels of agency of characters passingly aware they are in a fancomic.

"Both?"
"Both."
"Yes, both is good"
I'm not aware of having this conversation, but I've been following this comic for... oh dear. A rather long time.
I'm aware from personal experience how one's characters can "seize the pen". I do wonder how much writes itself. Where can I read up on Bowie's comments?
I suspect that falling for his own role may in fact be the most human thing about him. How many people have found their true passion in something which began as a simple amusement,Β after all? And of course the Big Question: Is the G.K. more than tight pants and leering suggestions? Is our Victor more than the willingness to tear down worlds to right her wrongs? Is he the Victim to be repaid, or is he the consequence of her actions?
It all gets a bit deep for a fancomic based on an 80s movie. As always, love your writing. Your characters are a treasure.

Bowie's insights on being the GK can be found in featurettes included in Anniversary editions (and probably online) - one video interview in particular where he is still rocking the dramatic Jareth eyeliner while un-wigged and otherwise in civvies, rather droll. Intriguingly his way of phrasing it, something like an irritated "oh no the goblins have gone and stolen another baby", could seem to nix some interpretations of Jareth deliberately trying to set up The Girl with the Right Words ; but again, semi-canon, pick'n'mix.

And, this explanation of Jareth is so spot-on, it hurts. As if it's an wonder we all love you, Pika. There are no easy answers here and EVERYONE is shades of gray. INCLUDING Jareth. 'And nothing is what it seems'.

Panel 5 is going down in my memory as one of those character defining scenes that reveal so much and instil so much passion.
Up there with the Sir Percy Blakeney kissing the ground his wife walked on after a fight, the sound of "As You Wish" being called as the Dread Pirate Roberts rolls down a hill, the look in the eyes of Raj when Meera called him to help her, and Eve wrapping herself around Adam when he was succumbing to his melancholy.
It is one of those moments that turns a good story into something life changing.

HE SAID THE RIGHT WORDS
I literally felt my heart stop when I read them. Even though that's always been a thing and he's made sure everyone knows it, it's the first time he's said it, and I'm so happy he did.
(Annnnnnd it looks like Sarah is too? )
But just... the phrasing... when she put the same subject into words, it was about being his queen and all that involves-- but he flat out made sure she knows that he doesn't look at it like that. It's all about love! AH!
I might be in a bit of a strange mood because I get to see my boyfriend tomorrow for the first time in 2 months and this just got my little heart all excited and shippy and sappy and happy. You can ignore me. ^_^

they havent actually figured things out yet. the pale man might still come crashing from the kitchen, kidnap jareth, somehow frame erik for it and set raoul off in a fit of goodie-two-shoes heroism while the girls and once again the ones who have to fix shit and james and javert have to try and keep raoul from turning erik into mince meat...

Is it wrong that I just want them to hug?
Not kiss.
Just hug.
Because they could both use one at this point, and I feel like a hug doesn't have that added degree of potential Awkward.
They just Care.
And that's important.

Let me tell you, I've only recently watched Labyrinth for the first time and when I checked for the tv tropes page (as I often do when I watch a movie I love) I found this comic of yours and I gotta say.... I LOOOVE IT!!! I love all of the characters, some I had known before (but not as well) and some I hadn't but thanks to this comic I learned to love them all and it's just amazing how far things have progressed and how the characterizations have developed. I pretty much binged-read the whole 300+ pages in these last 6 days or so whenever I had time because I just couldn't stop reading. Anyways I'm so excited to see how this is gonna go especially with Jareth and Sarah. You've made a fan out of me!

"figured out" hahahaha.
Seriously, it's a little bit weird and wonderful, and not to get all kooky "my muses are out of control teehee", but this JS argument was/is PAGES of back and forth dialogue scribbled down over several brainstorming sessions and Shower Thoughts and all, and kind of going round in angsty circles; then when it came to setting them to paper, what happens is that half the clever lines I had are missed in favour of brand new ones, and here, that whole bottom line of panels came to me outta the blue and kinda broke the stalemate just like that.

I LOVED the bottom panels! Jareth and Sarah looking at each other like that *swooooon*
yeah, i can have an outline, scripted dialog, and sit down to the word processor and the muse says 'nope! we're goin' THAT-A-WAY!'
I got to the point i just plain don't plot for Telki, she does what she wants.

I'm loving that they're working things out, don't get me wrong, but why are the two choices "come freely and be corrupted" or "be forced and keep your moral high horse"? Can't she just not be with him if it means losing herself or endangering others? Either choice still makes her a "bad guy," unless she gets with Jareth and actively works against her dark urges.
This is sacrilege for a Jareth/Sarah shipper, I know, but her logic smells like a false dichotomy.
(Also, I understood Sarah rejecting Jareth at the end of the movie as a parallel for rejecting immaturity, or an immature view of adulthood. Now that she's an adult, she could revisit that choice with confidence, and make the riskier choice now that she knows all the consequences. It's just one take on the material, but I thought I'd throw it out there.)
π: 0 β©: 1
Pika-la-Cynique In reply to iesnoth [2017-07-06 06:34:38 +0000 UTC]
Kinda 2 themes to the movie, as I see it - "it's not fair, but that's the way it is", and, the moral of the ending as you point out, which is about tempering fantasy with reality and responsibility, but not denying the need for/benefits of fantasy.
So yeah, Sarah has always been afraid of/at risk of losing herself because of her own [selfish/but also legit] desires for romance and adventure. Sure, the other choice is "not be with him", except at this point in the comic Sarah has decided that she *wants* to explore their chemistry and unfinished business (and this is a shippy 'verse damnit). As you say, with added maturity and adulthood and "sometimes the way forward is also the way back" - except she cannot stand for the consequences of her riskier choice biting other people, because of her personal baggage+moral alignment. This is deliberately not easy.
On the other hand, Sarah beats impossible Labyrinths, and is creator-sanctioned to get what she wants/needs if she keeps her self safe, so....
