Description ... while I don't subscribe to the Mayan end-of-times prophecy for 2012 (December 21 is 'The Hobbit' release, the world can't end then!), I do feel horribly cynical and a little depressed at the way some things are looking up ahead for the world (you know - financial meltdown, Big Money getting away with everything, the rise of the far-right parties here in Europe, the head-banging obscurantism and reactionary sexist, poverty-bashing attitudes coming from the Republican candidates, SOPA and its ilk....) .... despite being guardedly optimistic about my personal situation ... and, more whimsically, I can't help but wonder if the sheer amount of expectations that something is due to happen in 2012 won't somehow, in some Discworldian-power-of-human-belief rules-of-narrative-causality twist, cause something to actually happen...

Anyhoo. In the light of all that, best wishes to all.

Quite honestly, even if the Mayans predicted the end, I don't think they meant the end of the world...just the end of internet freedom if the big shots have anything to say about it. XDD

I think The Hobbit is actually due out on December 14th so you're off by a week.

Yeah, I'm kinda expecting suicide cults, terrorist attacks and the like all through December 2012.
It's not even their own religion! They'll do it because all of a sudden it's trendy... :-/

Self fulfilling prophecy: If you expect it to happen it will? Well shi-

Speaking of The Hobbit, will Sherlock and Watson (BBC) ever make an appearance? Lets have a show of hands everyone! Who wants to see a Sherlock vs Javert showdown!

I have good vibes about 2012
Whereas '11 was terrible even from the beginning (many deaths, drepressions and other sickness) it seems like '12 is going to be great.

I usually dont like commenting on 2012 stuff- since the whole "we're All going to die" have me rolling my eyes so hard they could fall off....

but since you're a sensitive person...

anyway, I had a class with an invited lecturer who has studying mayans for 40-45 years (so he probably knows mayans more than the dumbers who cocked up the whole end of the world thing)

according to this lecturer- the mayans Did predicted an End. But Not of the world per say.

but of a cycle. the mayans, contrary to us, measure time in Cycles (like summer gives way to fall then fall to winter/ childhood, teenagehood- adulthood, etc)
so when they say "2012= end" they meant end of a CYCLE

as for the current state of the world--- well it's the beginning of the year. i would like to think a lot can happen in a year- and hopefully for the best.

There is a feeling about 2012 I can't seem to shake. Something big is coming. Something different change is in the air and it's a mixture of foreboding and rejuvenation. I'm endeavouring to make the most of this year.

Wishing you a good year Pika!

Pff... do you think your candidates are crazy? come to South America and see for yourself what crazy means. I'm from Argentina, here all what's illegal is possible. You commited a murder, no problem! here there is NO WAY the evidence will be used against you, we don't even have the reactives and general lab equipment to even have DNA proof. So don't worry, you'll be as free as a bird (yeah, I'm being a LITTLE sarcastic here ) So, for me, the "end" of the provervial world cannot be worse

BTW, great pic Pika dear!!

The Mayan's were simply counting down to the HOBBIT. That's all.
But yes the world is in scary meltdown on all fronts currently.

Except in Norway... Let's all move to Norway!

Tell me does Norway have any stupid laws against the internet? Like the sopa thing?

Nope and not ACTA either since they refuse to be part of the EU. The biggest problem in Norway right now is a butter shortage.

Butter shortage? What happen?

Maybe I should learn the language and move there. I am part Norwegian.

Google it, it's rather funny. Denmark, Belgium and Sweden had to bail them out with butter for Christmas.

No country is immune to crazy individuals. I was speaking economically and politically as a whole. They are independently stable economically, they refuse to join the EU, and they have some of the most progressive public welfare programs in the world. (Healthcare, education, employment, equality, etc...)

I could move there too. I'd adapt to the winter eventually.
And Most people speak enough English so I could survive. I know TAKK (TACK) = Thank You. So at least I can be polite for a bit until I learn the language.
