Description
I've had something like this in mind for a long time, and I finally got my aft to actually work on it. It seems that currently doing art as something more physical than drawing lines on my tablet is much more enjoyable. The set is simply built from a cardboard box with a bit of a tongue in cheek and the windows are butter paper glued from the other side to bring ambient light. Furniture is from IKEA (
I also had to build a smartphone holder to take photos using my old camera's small tripod and some, uh, metallic flower pot's support beam thing and a few screws since it had to be small enough to fit into the set.
Toys used:
Arcee - Generations Thrilling 30, Deluxe Class (Hasbro)
Strongarm - Robots in Disguise 2015, Adventure, Warrior Class (Takara)
K-2SO - Bandai Star Wars 1/12 Scale Plastic Model Kit (Disney)
Devastator - Generations, Gift Set (Hasbro)
Shockwave - Transformers Prime Beast Hunters, Voyager (Hasbro)
I didn't even bother dragging my tablet out for the editing. Mouse for the win! :'D
Tools used: Photoshop CC, Oneplus X smartphone, a silly loose-legged tripod and at most five different lightsources.

Yeah, it's odd. Not alone are they aliens, but robots too. They wouldn't have a need for a gender.
You could basically design them in any way you want and call them either male or female (whatever
you feel like), it makes no difference.
unless they would have been created/build by humans or any species that uses gender roles. Then
it would make sense. That, or just the fact -as you mentioned- they adapt to the human culture and
actually like that idea and choose a gender for themselves..whatever they like better, haha!

Exactly!
It's sad that English doesn't have a gender-neutral pronoun to replace "she" or "he". Thanks to my mother language, I still have trouble defining which to use, she or he, since ours is gender-neutral with that pronoun. :V Why is it so important to separate if something is a male or a female?!? Ugh, I say, ugh!

The cups, oh dear with the cups!!! Blu Tack to the rescue, with an additional piece of tape. Blu Tack isn't the best with such smooth surfaces like the toy's plastic and ceramic, gruh. I edited it out in one panel because it just looked ugly. X) I had to take the photos quickly so nothing would fall off before I was done. I don't have any holders for toys so where K-2SO is getting shot at I was holding his leg to keep him still.
The biggest challenge still was to move the toys without disturbing their position on the couch, especially Arcee. She might have moved a little between the shots...

Patroclusilliad233 [2018-03-17 21:54:47 +0000 UTC]
Ya know, in the Covenant of Primus (the sourcebook) Alpha Trion explained that the primary difference between a male and female cybertronian was 'the architecture of their brain module', in fact the oldest Cybertronian languages do not have gender specific pronouns and those got introduce from cultural exchange with aliens.
By that logic, 'gender' is so trivial, that Transformers really don't see it. After all, our concept of gender arises and is basically defined from our need to procreate. Without that, Transformers have no interest in what makes a 'boy' different from a 'girl' robot. So the idea that a girl transformers is inherently more fragile than a male, emotionally or physically is inherently illogical.

pika In reply to Patroclusilliad233 [2018-03-17 22:27:05 +0000 UTC]
And Alpha Trion writes that book, from his perspective and observations, to "tell the tale" for later generations. Like we've witnessed in MTMTE Dark Cybertron, Ratchet and others couldn't tell the difference between "he" and "she" by the looks. To us humans such definitions are 'obvious', aka "ooh, boob plates and wide hips and painted lips, she is so hot!" -style.
Illogical indeed!

DoctorVK In reply to pika [2018-03-18 09:25:14 +0000 UTC]
No. Mustatko kun AOE esitteli Slash nimisen Dinobotsin ensimmäisen kerran?

Toinen uniikki lelu POTPilla on Leader Class Rodimus Unicronus jonka mukana tulee Nemesis Hot Rod.

Certainly hit the nail on the head with this one, or more accurately, the blaster fire to the helm. This certainly has been an interesting take on the Cybertronian race itself, of course they'd have different views on things than humans, up until only recently in comparison to both races existences, especially in the Cybertronian case, they'd never interacted! So why would they have the same opinions on everything?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pika In reply to Moonlightdeer739 [2018-03-17 22:19:02 +0000 UTC]
Exactly! Sure they are 'humanoid' looking, but that doesn't mean they should act and think like humans if they've never interacted with them. It's a pet peeve of mine when human terms are freely used in context with bots that have nothing to do with Earth, was it fan works or canon.
For example in Transformers Prime, Knock Out said "come to papa!" (along with Breakdown and Bulkhead who both have also been on Earth for quite some time) which means they'd be aware of human culture and what it even meant. Later we get to know that KO has been watching human movies, so that's very much acceptable that he uses human terms. Then comes a million years in the past scene in a comic where an obviously masculine character (Galvatron) is in a bar with two feminine looking "teehee giggle giggle" bots with obvious round chest plates and hair (?!?!?!) hugglesnuggling him. I ranted about this already on Tumblr and that scene would have been perfectly fine if the other giggle bot had been looking masculine instead and giving the hint of "looks and gender doesn't matter". (Unless of course Galvatron likes the more feminine frames, but it was so irrelevant to the whole story it just pisses me off! Hahaha. XD )

I haven't seen that comic I don't think, I'm only really following the Mtmte and lost light comic, though I will admit, I was a bit surprised at them exploring this at first. First thought thinking 'There's gonna be a lot of trolls loosing their minds over this becoming cannon'. Honestly I don't care what someone is, be it their orientation, gender standing, hell, they could say they identified as a shovel and I would be fine with that, as long as I can have a decent conversation with them for example, I'm fine. I was really happy to see that these subjects are being explored, especially in a franchise that's been going for so long.
My love for Transformers came when I was ten, and I watched the first premier of Transformers Prime one day after school, for the next three months I binge watched every series I could find, but immediately I felt a little off put at the fact that there was, at most, a singular token female. And when there was more, the majority were cons.
Now at age ten I wasn't really in the know, and I quickly just brushed it off as 'it is a boys show'. But I still watched, I still became immersed with the entire franchise. And yet that odd feeling never went away, and it still lingers.
Which is why I'm so happy to see things like what you've created here and what are in the comics now, so much ground is being uncovered and it feels like a bit of a breath of fresh air.
So thank you. For helping that nagging feeling that's been in my gut for the last eight years, die just that bit more. We're getting there, slowly, but we're getting there.

Love is love! I've watched a lot of TF series, basically all that's been released in English, except Transformers Energon. I've tried to watch that three times now and haven't gotten very far... XD But in all of them, the concept is the same; war war war and more war and a lot of things are just black and white with a few droplets of grey like Dreadwing, Knock Out and Ratchet in TFP, Starscream in Armada, Dinobot, Blackarachnia and Depth Charge in Beast Wars, and so on. All of it would have been very dull if it wasn't for those characters ruffling the feathers into direction or another.
And of course the lack of feminine characters that use pronoun "she". Heck, even non-feminine characters that used word "she" would have been awesome. I'd say Beast Machines Strika is a winner in this, though.
Then came the comics, bam, More Than Meets The Eye and the basics are all flipped upside down! Post-war, love interests, compassionate and complex characters and people's minds where blown away. Transformers became a thing for everyone, literally, and I love it! So yes, we are getting there, probably faster than some can adjust their ways of thinking, but the change is here already!
You're welcome and just stomp the nagging feeling down to the floor cracks!
Ps. Here's the panels I'm rambling about:

Moonlightdeer739 In reply to pika [2018-03-17 23:15:46 +0000 UTC]
I fully agree with you.
Oh and on the Energon note, you are missing nothing, I binged watched that shitty mess in four days flat. Honestly it was made easier became I was just like 'let the thing go in one ear and out the other... what the fuck is with these cgi models?! Beast Wars had better looking animation!'
Like I said before, I binged watched them all, from G1 to Animated whilst I was waiting for every new episode of Transformers Prime to air. Then came Robots in disguise (I also watched the Japanese ones, that was an ordeal, and got me to accidentally watch an entire season of Gundam 00 whilst shouting at the screen for the giant robots to just transform, boot the whiny humans into the atmosphere, and have their battles in space!) and with Robots in disguise came this feeling of 'why does this even exist?' yet I still watched every episode of every season.
Hell I watched every episode of Rescue Bots because it was a nice break from all the war, and just watching the Rescue bots live their lives on Grphyn rock was a nice change.
In regards to that comic slip, I can see what you mean, that was a pretty blatant one there.
Personally I'm not really looking forwards to the train wreck which I predict the next series is going to be, but like the rest I'll watch it anyway, because apparently I love to put myself through that kind of hell. But at least I have the comics... that being said, the last few issues, albeit they've been heartfelt, have become noticeably more preachy shall we say. And not being religious at all myself, that's making it a bit harder to swallow, still love it, but the preaching is leaving an after taste if you get what I mean?

pika In reply to Moonlightdeer739 [2018-03-18 14:07:20 +0000 UTC]
I feel you on the "wtf is this scrap?!?" on most older TV series. Obviously meant to sell toys more than telling a deep story as a bonus. The characters were either dark and gloomy no-fun or complete comic reliefs. Or the righteous ones who also had a comic relief sidekick, or two. And none had any deeper personalities. Most memorable for me was Sky-Byte in RiD 2001. Who wouldn't love a shark who flies, sings poems and identifies himself with a jellyfish!
I love Rescue Bots! It's cute, the stories make sense, and the character development throughout the series is awesome! And they all can sing! But most of all, the more mature jokes in that show are mostly hilarious. Like the first episode in the fourth season where Huxley and Mrs. Neederlander had a bet if the bots are sentient or not.
I laughed out loud the first time. I'm pretty sure that few seconds scene would go over the head of any kid watching the show, heehehe. I find it interesting that Rescue Bots is in the same universe and timeline as TFP and RiD2015. And oh dear with Optimus and his triple-changing abilities! Sure a t-rex Optimus would have been awesome in TFP but, you know, cost would have been way too much, and the third mode irrelevant to the story.
Yes, blatant comic panel, I want to bleach me eyes~
The promo-art of the newest incoming TV-series with Bee as main character and Windblade as his sidekick is making me doubt the quality of the show. But exact same happened with RiD2015. The first promo-art was NOT very flattering to the show itself. So we shall see what's to come. I haven't watched the newest short-episode series Combiner Wars sequel. I have no interest, but I should at least give it a try. People have said it's better than the first one. (By saying word 'better' doesn't say much when the first one was such a... I don't know...a let down mediocre thing overall?)
I managed to just yesterday read #16 and I've been spoiled beforehand so some things weren't such a surprise. The overall tone wasn't that much of preaching to me, and I'm not religious at all myself either. I'm like Ratchet in the story, and also like Whirl, and I'd definitely do the exact same as Roddy did with the whistling and calling! But it was an interesting take on the religion(s) that TFs have, and I'm pretty sure that's just the tip of the iceberg. I'm very interested of how they'll get out of that predicament and whom all they can actually take with them when that happens! It would open such many doors to character development and of course give fans at least a bit more breathing space and relief, if only temporarily, it would still be much welcome!

I agree with you on pretty much every factor your just listed off, I forgot to mention how much I loved the Rescue Bots more mature jokes!
The big question that's lingering in my mind after reading #16 is, where the hell is Skids?! He hardly died contempt given the poor mechs tragic end, I don't he'd find himself content in purgatory any time soon, wouldn't you agree?
Out of all the characters I honestly find myself most appreciative of Magnus/Minimus Ambus, namely because they're the most calm out of the lot in general, and I prefer a nice quiet environment, and not one of crazy antics like Rodimus for example is so prone to. So I'd be happy just to sit around like Magnus does and just watch all the crazy antics roll bye with a 'They better not break something' going about in my head.
In regards to Rid01 I liked the human Kelly(?) the most, the one hotshot was always chasing after, I felt her pain, she just wanted to drive in her favourite colour of car, not be constantly hounded by something just won't go away. Which I think everyone in the world can attest to experiencing at some point in their life.

pika In reply to Moonlightdeer739 [2018-03-18 23:02:42 +0000 UTC]
I'm sure we'll meet Skids at some point. Why show everything in one issue when JRo can leave such juicy details to later ones? I'm pretty impulsive and random occasionally just because of thinking "I don't have time to be embarrassed over every little thing just to not lose my public face" or something, but I can still be one to stand still for long time and do nothing but think. So yes, I'd partly be like UM/MA too. Although, didn't he say in a few issues ago that personal things aren't something he can discuss about due to not being able? So whole religion thing is possibly something like "this is just a chaotic nightmare I'll wake up from soon!" Or at least that's the vibes I get from him.
I found it rather disturbing how Side Burn (not Hotshot, I checked wiki! lol) would go after the red car just like that and shout a lot of... things. Harassment in action head on and it was supposed to be funny (because Side Burn was talking to the car, not the driver!), but it was quite the opposite. Talk about catcalling as an accepted behavior for a Cybertronian, especially in a cartoon aimed at young boys, rawr. >:V Poor Kelly!

In regards to Magnus not speaking about personal matters, that's also something I can relate to a lot, a lot goes on inside my head that I don't like to talk about because those around me don't really easily grasp the very out there concepts constantly bubbling away in my mind. And many of a time they've told me just not to talk about it. 'I don't understand what you're talking about ****' being a common one.
Speaking of future events in the comics, I'm guessing you saw the possible issue 20 front cover? If no that's fine, but it's got me hyped.
Anyway, sorry for the late reply, for some reason didn't get the usual alert that you'd replied.
The harassment bit is also why I wasn't keen on Sideburn, but favourite of that show was Prowl, such a quirky version of the police officer I couldn't help but laugh at his antics.
