Description This is a 5 part pocket etch a sketch compilation of the famous sculpture known as the laocoon.
It was an assignment for my Art History 2 class to make your own artistic interpretation of this sculpture, and our teacher didn't want us to just redraw it, so I decided that I was going to do it in 5 portions, each with a different style of shading and rendering. My personal favorite is the 8bit version, which I plan on using in future work.
The piece took roughly 5 hours, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. This is the first assignment I have been able to do in etch a sketch at my art college, so I was totally on board with it

The picture of the laocoon (which I used for reference) is on the upper right, so that you can get a better idea of what I was going for.

EDIT: 2-19-11 Thank you so kindly for the Daily Deviation! I am truly honored!

I am so amused by this, you have no idea. hahaha

The paper I wrote on this statue would have been much less drab if I had seen this first.

Good work!

no prob!

is it true if you make something with etch a sketch and then you make a mistake you have to re-do all of it?

I noticed that each Etch-A-Sketch has a different style of drawing in it. #2 has a lot of bubbles, but #3 is very strict with now curves. #4 has light shading, while #5, right next to it, has extremely heavy shading. #1 is left out of the mix entirely.
I don't know if this was intended, but it's a very interesting effect. In a sense, I'd say it's messy and chaotic, but at the same time, it's also very creative, unique, and of course, artistic.
The fact that this is all on an Etch-A-Sketch in itself is amazing, and very impressive.
I think that if you made this into a full picture, whether by drawing or by photographs put together on a large poster, I think it would be good enough not just for Deviantart, but for a real artshow.

pikajane In reply to inside-our-mind [2011-02-20 16:05:43 +0000 UTC]

wow, thank you a lot!
The different styles were definitely intentional, because our teacher didn't just want us to re-draw the statue. So I though 5 different styles would be a more unique way to go about it
Someday I hope to get an actual art show going
