When I was doing this now I thought of a story. A little kid who is scared of the dark, and fascinated with knights and medieval times. Her father isn't an inventor or anything, not even the mechanical type. He's just an office worker, briefcase and suit. But he teaches himself and spends many late nights out in the garage, building this robot out of spare parts and junk. All garages are full of junk So she has her own little knight to save her from the monsters under the bed or whatever.
