Description Finished version of this . I really fucked up the dust kicked up by the Hippodraco and the upturned body of the struggling Utahraptor it drags along. As the dust is basically a joke, I might turn it into something that doesn't hurt the eye one day.

It doesn't depict the thought-provoking "RPR" hypothesis about deinonychosaur predation brought forward in this wonderful free publication , but does show that even large dromaeosaurids were not quite the biggest or tallest theropods to go with, and would probably stand a much better chance in a very physical wrestling match with similarly-sized prey.

It would be very cool if we found a "fighting dinosaurs" fossilized duel between these species. To me the dust looks almost like a spash, as if the Hippodraco is shoving the Utahraptor into a river.

That'd be amazing indeed, but then again, the Lancian ceratopsid vs. juvenile tyrant hyped by Bakker might be the next installment of the "2 non-avialan dinos combatant" theme. You might be right about the dust, and I frankly didn't care to improve it, so there's little chance I'd ever return to this drawing and correct the - admittedly poor - dust effect.

It's refreshing to see the "Helpless" prey animal owning the "Supreme predator" for a change.

Brilliant ! Good to see more theropods biting the dust sometimes, although I think the raptor still has a good chance to win here -next time aim to the neck, ornithopod! . Like others said I think the dust is decent looking, I wouldnΒ΄t worry about.

Are they hugging each other? aww that's so cute!...or maybe not, that thumb missed into Utah's body seems a little bit painful.
Seriously, great, great scene. -and I envy your patience for draw the detailed wings.-

Thanks! Wings are easy though, at least those standard ones with this kind of primary/secondary feathers.

Awesome, love the dromaeosaur's pose, as I think I already said. And the dust really doesn't look too bad!

I'm working on a RPR image myself, should be done later today (it's an, erm, "Christmas feast" picture, haha).

The dromie's pose came by really naturally (due to its inherent lateralness), although my gf claims to have inspired it

Saw your RPR pic, faved it. Sorry for the long delay after my proposal to do a blogpost, lots of things kept me from finally doing it. Apologies for that, Emily.

Thanks for that. And hey, take your time with the blog post, this time of year is always crazy.

Cool!

Hey, are you still intending to write the blog thing for RPR on Deinonychosauria? If you're not it's no biggie, I just wanted to know whether that was still on the backburner or not.

I'd honestly appreciate it if I wouldn't need to do it. It's no longer a "new" topic anyway.

Wonderful, simply wonderful.
Love how you've portraited this scene, with the raptor locked in a difficult combact with his prey instead of roaring like a monster upon the defendless herbivore's corpse. Amazing.
By the way, what do you think about RPR?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pilsator In reply to E-Smaniotto [2011-12-25 17:52:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot, Smnt! It was supposed to be a freeze-frame from a hunt, and i might elaborate on the background later.

I do think that RPR is the first attempt at deinonychosaur predation behavior that really rigorously tested a plausible-looking scenario. Gorgeous paper by the way. I tip my hat at Fowler, Freedman and Scanella.

E-Smaniotto In reply to pilsator [2011-12-25 19:51:54 +0000 UTC]

Me too, same thought. What I've truly appreciated about that paper is that they propose an alternative predatory behaviour for dromaeosaurids other than the supposed hook-usage and/or the throat-slashing act just looking at modern animal kingdom, something that we must do more often instead of supposing extreme ideas. I wonder what analogues we'll discover in the near future...
