Description
digital painting realized for The How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - Discover Your Duo ContestI started working on several pieces simultaneously, but I just had to draw something Grimmel related. It started out just as a doodle, ended up being a full piece out of nowhere.
The contest I am sure will want "good duos", "good companies", but I tend to always go the other direction around. So just to shake a bit the duos for this contest, here, a really bad company to have.

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. That white Night Fury looks very interesting.

This has the feel of the watercolor and gouache technique style favored by illustrators in the mid 20th Century. I like it. The sky and the lighting with the sunset (or is it sunrise) work great.

It is indeed sunset.
You flatter me with your comment. Wish i knew how to paint like the artists of the 20th century. I simply try to put on paper what I have in my head, but I lack yet the technique and knowledge to make things properly work together.
But I am glad i got somehow close to the watercolor and gouache feeling.

I'm going to tell you something that will probably leave you confused. I know it confused me when I was told this in a drawing class back in the late 1970s. 'Stop trying to make your drawing look like the model and start trying to make the model look like your drawing.' I can honestly tell you that it took some years before I fully understood that statement and that was after I realized that I had been doing just that. If you have looked through my gallery, you may have noticed some aviation paintings. I have a lot of reference material on hand when I start one of those paintings. By the time I'm about half way through the painting, I am no longer looking at the reference. As I'm getting into the refinements and the details, I'm moving things around (not by much) until they feel right to me. Inwardly, I'm always amused when people in the aviation field comment on how much they look like the real planes. What they are saying is (for example) is that an AV-8B Harrier II looks like my little color sketch. The same can be said about the HTTYD book and movie drawings and paintings I've posted here. The Dreamworks character models of Hiccup and Toothless may look like the Hiccup and Toothless I painted in Foggy Night Flight, but they are not exact. I don't care about that. I did not set out to be exact. I set out to paint what felt right to me at that time as the artist.
I look at your Bad Companies painting and I say 'Yes. Grimmel and the Light Fury look like that.' But more than that, I look at it and say 'Now that's a cloudy sunset.' I don't know what the look is that you are trying to attain with your art. (You may not know that for yourself just yet) But, I know that you've attained a look that has caught my attention. I'd say you are doing something right in your journey to where you want to be as an artist. Let me suggest that you take some time to look at all kinds of drawings and paintings - from different eras - and make note of the things that make you think of what you want to do in your art. Then study those works and artists. Try to work what you are responding to in those works into your work. It's not easy, but it will get you there.

Drago wasn't memorable for me. I even forgot his name until later that i readed about Grimmel.

Thank you! Wish i knew how to realistically render stuff like many do. But at least it doesn't look as bad as it could.

Very nice drawing, very dramatic. I love the backview of Grimmel and the Light Fury. The colors are very pretty and the way you painted the clouds is impressive. Very interesting seeing her in his hands like this, I don't remember seeing other art of this theme.

Thank you so much!! I appreciate the kind words a lot. I was worried indeed my theme would turn too dark for the contest. I saw no one going this route and the villain is barely drawn.
I really wanted to illustrate how dangerous Grimmel can be, but in a more calm non fighting atmosphere. As the title says, simply illustrating "bad companies".
The clouds always give me lots of trouble! I should do studies of clouds to understand them better. I love how they do them in HTTYD movies!
Hopefully this piece is okey for the contest as I mentioned, worried it doesn't fit just because I use the bad guy. But I am working on other more cheerful entries, hopefully I can get them drawn in time!

I do think you illustrated that very well. I'm not too familiar with the guidelines but I wish you luck with this piece, and even if it doesn't fit the contenst, it's a great drawing on its on!

Ahhh Thanks a lot!! I read the guidelines several times but I still feel I might have understood something wrong. OH well. At least I enjoyed drawing this.
Thank you!

Thanks a lot.
Busy, feeling low, the usual. Trying to pull with my art though not happy with the results. Thought i would join the contest at least to push me to do something.
Yeah, i liked the movie. Bitter Sweet.

Quite bittersweet indeed. Loved it and the ending? OMG those babies! They looked like Orca Whales. So cute! X3

Indeed. And unlike Shrek, it didn't outstay its welcome. It had a very solid & tightly written story.

Well, they are complete different stories xD
But yes. I love how the third movie wrapped up from the first. Second movie to me is the weakest of the three.

I don't know about that. The second movie had some amazing moments happen. Especially the reunion between Hiccup's parents.

Yes. But still i found it a bit too rush. Too much happening in a short span of time so it just didnt go down as smooth as first and last.

Yeah, agreed. But it was handled very maturely. I didn't notice the villan's arm until I watched it again. That was a clever surprise.
