Description
Abyssal Chickens are small demons that are native to most of the Nine Hells, however their primary populations are concentrated within Avernus and the aforementioned Abyss. These opportunistic killers will hunt smaller and medium creatures, and that includes many sapient species, both hell-natives and mortal outsiders. Their sharp, needle-like teeth is more than capable enough of tearing sizeable chunks of flesh off of someone, and their talons can easily tear through one's arteries. Abyssal Chickens are usually not alone, often roaming in large flocks, however unlike many other pack hunting demons, these fiendish critters don't actually work together traditionally, as while they do chase down larger beasts in a ravenous pack, they're more often to fight and kill each other over the meat.

Their teardrop-shaped bodies actually come from their strange folded wings, and while they aren't capable of powered flight like other winged hell creatures, Abyssal Chickens are capable of gliding long distances. Abyssal Chickens can also use their gliding wings to ambush their prey, latching and grappling onto them with their sharp talons, this is really helpful in taking out heavier creatures, as well as the hapless, unprepared adventurer.

A weird part about the life cycle of the Abyssal Chicken is the matter of their Spawning "Trees". These fleshy tree-like organisms are not plants, but they're in actuality heavily mutated Abyssal Chickens who went through a metamorphosis that happens rarely through in certain members of their species. Every once in a while, one or two members of a flock will begin to go under phases of metamorphosis once certain criteria are met; They've gotten old enough, and have ingested enough calories and nutrients to afford the change. The chickens will begin to meld into the hellish earth, and will grow and mutate into a fleshy branching mass, until they fully become a Spawning Tree. These chicken trees will quickly grow out pods on their branches, and which they'll then fall off and come out of the pods as fully grown creatures. The Spawning Trees do not eat, but they will live for a fairly long time, for around ten years until they eventually wither and crumble.

Many devils and intelligent demons often herd and domesticate Abyssal Chickens, usually to farm them for food, and it should be noted that these fiendish critters do actually taste almost exactly like chicken. These chicken creatures are also prized as pets and familiars among both adventurers and hellish ruffians.
