Painted and drawn with watercolours and coloured pencil on cardboard ( 50 X 70 cm)

I made this picture for the Facebook Character Design (CD) Challenge. This month theme : Aviator (www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi… )
At the beginning I was trying to figure out what kind of character I wanted to make. I had some sketches with pilot characters (human and animal ones) lying around but I wasn´t quite happy with them. While doing some research about aviation I eventually stumbled across an ancient mayan panel , showing someone sitting on a rocket shaped object and I instandly fell in love with the idea.
Although I did some sketches with characters from other time periods, the mayan idea stood out for me at the end.
When I was drawing and painting the pilot and her machine I´ve tried to stay as close to the flat mayan art as possible while also giving it some volume.
