Description
A Photographer on the Citadel
In a quiet part of the Citadel Wards, in a small alley known only to the locals, lies a studio.
Here lives and works a photographer who boldly defies all contemporary holographic technologies, relying instead on ancient human devices
based on crude mechanics and chemistry to capture his motifs.
Now - be it by chance or by purpose - some of the greatest heroes of our time found their way into that studio to stand before the camera...
You can find the whole series > here <
The "Bla bla bla" part
Wanted to do an 'en profil' 'photo' of Liara for quite some time now. With a head silhouette like that, you just have to!
When I decided to give it a go I thought this would be a 'quickie'. Turns out it had to go through more iterations (read: complete changes of concept) than all my previous Liara renderings before it stopped looking boring or 'too technical' and became something I liked. It was even a 'Sad Liara' at some point, modeled (!) tears and everything ...
And speaking of modeling, there was quite a bit of it this time. Apart from smaller details, I had to remake almost the complete mesh of the folds on Liara's neck. The original one is far from optimized for their form and looked horrible in a close up like this.
Anyway, it was fun to change tone and work with a bit more light this time, though it probably won't become the new 'standard' for the series.
But who knows ...
The technical stuff
All pictures of this series are based on models and textures directly extracted from Mass Effect's game files and modified by me where I deemed it necessary.
Posing, lighting, rendering were done in 3dsMAX + V-Ray.
Background, composing, postprocessing in PS.
Updates
17/07/2012 - Small update with slightly altered eye reflections. Should look a bit more believable now.

It's not blind hatred. I have good reasons for expressing my opinions. And calling me a redneck is not an argument, it just proves that you have nothing to say.

I love this one. There is something about Liara's expression like she's a little embarrassed but also kind of happy to be able to strut her stuff a little. I would LOVE to see you do one of Liara and Femshep together!

Sorry, missed to notice your comment earlier somehow.
I always liked the idea of bringing other ME characters into this series. Didn't think so much of couples, but I have to admit, this has a lot of potential.
That said though, I decided to keep my focus on just Liara for the time being. Mostly for "Art is great, but a lot of work" - time reasons, to put it simply.
So I'm afraid I'll have to keep it at a vague "Noted. Maybe in the future?" for the moment...
Thanks, matyd!

That I wonder myself...
It's definitely on my radar as something many would like to see and I would like to do.
But tbh, if / when I get back to the series I'll most likely continue with Liara for a least one or even a couple of shots, as I have done a lot of work on her model (I'm currently working on a big update actually) and have quite a few unfinished scenes and ideas for her rusting away on my harddrives.
That said, I do allready have the raw, exported models of Ash, Miri, EDI and others lying around as well. So never say never...

so.. I assume Liara is your "girl" huh..
well, this is an amazing shot. hats off to you no doubt. terrific job on the rendering setup, because the result is very realistic! the lighting is great, and the way you polished the whole image in ps just made it even more flawless.
I have a question though, if you don't mind. I see a couple of string like objects on the shoulder area, is that the model's pivots..?
looking forward to see more from you! and.. in the mean time, maybe you could show us some behind the scene images..? hhe.. just a thought

Heh, what can I say. Blue is my favourite color ...
The white lines are supposed to be scratches, following the idea of these pictures being 'good old' analogue photographies. I'm terrible at placing the scratches truely randomly though. They always seem to end up around her shoulders.
And about the 'behind the scene' stuff ... I don't know. Possible, I guess. But I'm not sure how much interesting content is in there, really. Anything in particular you're interested in?

ooh.. hha.. it looks subtle, so I thought it was pivots where you move the model's body parts..
well.. it's just a little suggestion, perhaps a comparison of the pre and post rendered images.. like those fancy movie vfx break down
