I've been cross-stitching for fourteen years now, since I was eight! While not the most experienced by any means, the majority of what I know is self-taught. With this in mind knots have been one of the most awful circumstances for me to run into. My very first piece was a simple purple flower; the purple thread knotted at the back and I freaked out and threw the whole thing away! Mom retrieved it and continued to nurture me into the patient and loving person I am today.
I hope it helps you from freaking out like I did and in the very least makes projects easier to get through.

Well, I never thought about how to get around this issue - I usually just ended up getting frustrated/cutting out that section of thread and having to redo everything. I have learned I am not a very patient person whatsoever, so I really appreciate you helping us less-than-virtuous hotheads out a little bit.

You're welcome again! Sometimes cutting the knot out and continuing isn't avoidable but this should hopefully save you some thread and frustration.
And do not fret
as I said my very first project was tossed into the trash because of knots so I don't think it makes you any less virtuous!

Heh ^^' well, I can always keep trying I suppose. My first crochet scarf turned into a shawl that wasn't quite strait/it curls because my stitched got tighter and tighter as I continued making it, but I am still very happy with/proud of it. Everything in it's time, I suppose.

Thanks for the info. Due to my studies as an architect, I tend to work with threads and those dreadful knots substract a lot of my time.

You're ever so welcome! I didn't realize architects work with thread often I'm happy to have helped even outside the target audience!

...any tips to having every damn thread snapping? Sorry for comment spamming, btw.

That's okay. You can coat it with something like NeedleMagic which is a wax I believe, and that'll help it stay stronger. There's also general strength of the thread you're using (one thread will break more often than two because of the tension distribution). I use DMC cotton thread mostly, but things like DMC metallics are more likely to fray and snap after too much use.
