Description
This little fellow slowly developed into a real character during roleplays. He started out as an adopted metallic white Betta Fish named Gamma, until Jake discovered he's a disguised Betta Merman and used a spell to reveal his true self.Eventually tried drawing little Gamma. And this is the result. ^_^
He's not much longer than a foot in mermaid form (including tailfin). He is also a special breed of tame Mer-Betta, so he can't live in the wild. He holds the magic power to transform into his fish counterpart to disguise himself as a normal Betta.
For the rest, he acts just like a real betta fish. Flares with his gills when he dissaproves, doesn't like being with others of the same species (although he can live with normal bettas), makes bubblenests, and anything else you can expect from a labyrinth fish.
He also likes to blow bubbles and attach one to his necklace.
Looking for critique on the style I used. Not the character itself.

Okay, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the tiny necklace. I think that was one of the-- or if not then THE most detailed part in the whole piece.
Yes, I've seen WAY too many bettamaids around DA now; each one pretty much the same thing. I can search up "betta fish" and all this stuff is the first stuff I see. Try drawing a REAL betta fish next time.
I love your technique. The background looks great, and regular, plain, just the way to make the fish stand out even more. It is great. And I love the color you chose. It really made me want to click this. And I did.
Wow. This impacted me bigtime. I actually love bettas but I didn't really guess that some people love them as much as I do, as to create a detailed drawing, and coloring of a betta. And to take it as far as to make it half boy!

The thing that immediately grabs my attention is the semi-transparent effect of Gamma's fins and tail.
It's not often that I come across a piece of art
where this sort of effect is done so well.
Another nice touch is the way you've suggested the
ripples of the water.
Might I make a suggestion? If you were to edit this
somewhere down the line, you might, perhaps, want to
add a gradient to the water so that it gets darker
towards the sea-bed. I think this would have enhanced
the sense of depth.
Just one other minor niggle; his hair would be drifting
around in the water, rather than being perfectly straight.

OMG he so cuuuute >w<
I always like seeing more people heading toward the "practical" side of mers, and this one is just too adorable. Bettas have such amazing colors.
Any artistic suggestions have already been summed up in previous comments, so not gonna make you read them again. But they're not as important as this seems to be a concept drawing more than an actual action drawing anyway

Yes, very well made. As you have said, he very well could be living in any of the numbers of lakes that are in the Labyrinth. But as we all know, the Labyrinth is all-changing. He could be in a small or large lake, or a sea, as some have claimed to have seen. Hmm...I wonder if he has seen his king lately. But than again, it would be a rare sighting.
