What a wonderful pipe!

I have a question, how do you drill the tube into the shaft? I have made a pipe as well, but from two halfs, which i carved out and glued together again. But it is not very beautiful because of the crack that is still visible.

Drilling a hole with a drill is impossible as the shaft of the pipe is curved. So i always wonder, how do you make a tube in a curved shaft?

Hi,
thank you for your comment. The shaft is drilled before bending. I am using a so called gun-drill wich is easy to manufacture. After drilling I am steaming the wood and bending it.

I hope that helps.

ooh that makes a lot of sense!

Do you have special material for steambending? I myself have not, ofcourse, so i wonder if it is possible with ordinary stuff.

Thanks for your reaction!

No problem,

I am using an old cooking pot. A bit of water in it, adjust the wood so it doesn't touch the water and then heat it until the water produces enough steam. It could be that you have to refill some water. For a 30cm shaft with round about 2cm diameter, I am steaming the wood for about two hours. Then I fix it an a bending form and leave it like this for two weeks. Don't let it dry too fast or the wood could crack.
I hope me english is understandable.

haha it's fine!

Good, thank you It is a long process i see. Is there any particular type of wood that you prefere to steambend?

Beech is a good choice for bending.

I have never tried to bend young pieces of wood. Maybe it works, otherwise try some usual beech. Do you have a turning lathe? It helps with the drilling. Your oak pipe looks nice, by the way.

Ah ok! Well i haven't, but i have a very steady hand. I am now doing a new pipe and i drilled the tobacco chamber and a bit of the tube. It is as straight as an arrow and perfectly aligned

But a friend of mine has a lathe, if handdrilling wouldnt work out, i would consider to use his.

Thanks for the compliment!

Freehand drilling is a good way.

If you want to use the gun drill, you should use the turning lathe. It doesn't work otherwise. But with a usual drill you might succeed with handdrilling. If you want to know more about gun drills, just send me a message.

I don't know much about pipes, but I know enough about wood after working a few years with it that this is beautiful extensive work, but stained am I correct? Well it still work even though it is stained? I know nothing of pipes so I cannot say, this is an honest question.

Hi, thank's for your comment. Yes, it is stained. If you mean stained as a kind of coloring. Sorry, my english isn't that good.
