Legolas greenleaf, long under tree
In joy thou hast livedβbeware of the sea!
If thou hears the cry of the call of the shore
Thy heart shall rest with the forest no more.

OK--I really love the treatment of Legolas' face here. He's interesting and fair without looking feminine--which is the mistake most people make with him and the other elves. >_> I also REALLY like his hair! It looks a little more sensible (as far as being an archer is concerned) than the design used in the movies. Lastly--clothing is my specialty, and simply adore what you've done here. The tight, high-necked shirt with the short over-tunic is classic, and his GLOVE is just wonderful! I want one. >_> Anyway--I appear to be gushing now. Well done!

oh wow thanks! this is one of the nicest comments I've gotten in a long time!
and you picked up on all the details that I was going for, and I'm glad you appreciate them. there is a difference between fair and feminine!

ooooh, like inger edelfeld's? I have to admit i like the black haired legolas! he's quite cool looking, although the puritan in me chokes on the notion because if i remember, legolas' appearance was spelled out pretty well, in the book. the rebel in me likes the black haired legolas though because, for characters that are spelled out well in the book, its hard to reinvent them!
thanks so much!

I like him with black/dark hair because it makes a bit more sense to me, black hair + dark dank creepy mirkwood = +10 survival points!
I think the book says something about his hair, it was on wikipedia *runs-off-to-check* .
... AH here it is!
Ahem:
"Appearance:
Among Tolkien fans, Legolas' hair colour is a matter of dispute. In The Hobbit his father Thranduil was described as having "golden" hair, so many assume that Legolas must have been blond also. However, others assume he was dark-haired (as was the norm for the Sindar; blond hair was mostly exclusive to the Vanyar) based on a passage in The Fellowship of the Ring where he shoots down a Ringwraith's fell beast:
Frodo looked up at the Elf standing tall above him, as he gazed into the night, seeking a mark to shoot at. His head was dark, crowned with sharp white stars that glittered in the black pools of the sky behind.
Some interpret this to mean that Legolas' hair must be either dark brown or black, as was the norm for the Sindar. Others have argued that since the above takes place at night, his head may have appeared "dark" due to shadows or the darkness itself, rather than due to his actual hair colour. Tolkien, however, makes references to the night being curiously bright:
The stars were strangely bright.
...in the star glimmer they must have offered their cunning foes some mark.
There is no clearer evidence for either possibility of hair colour.
Both Ralph Bakshi and Peter Jackson make him blond in their respective film adaptations. In a musical version of The Lord of the Rings, Legolas' hair is "dark" (or black). In the real-time strategy game The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring, his hair is white or silver." - Wikipedia [link] .
Personally, I don't mind, Legolas is cool, no mater what he looks like.

viva your research! yeah, that is an interesting argument presented. i guess i either latched on to the whole thranduil idea or just *presumed* that because he was "tall and fair" that that clearly included fair of hair, but the word fair has many definitions!
not being the preminant legolas fan, i never gave it too much thought, but i like the point of view you bring to the table C:

Oh wow! Legolas looks so beautiful in your style. <3
Great job on the hair and his clothes - the glove is a nice touch. But really, my favourite...ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE thing about this picture is just the facial structure. It's so beautifully done and really brings out his features.
Awesome!

Ooh, interesting gloves-- though i suppose, depending on what hand he's using for drawing the string of his bow, it would kind of make sense...?
You know you're a Tolkien geek when... all you need is to read the line of the title to go off, mentally, on the whole of Galadriel's message. |D;

I remember this from a while back. Great job with the coloring and the shading as well as the various details on his clothing and the glove. I would've never thought of giving him archery gloves (I think that's what they're called, I might be pulling something out of thin air), but they work.
