You know who's really good at lettering? : DNot me.
((So I'm not quite certain as to how I want to handle the brackets... I've been reading up on portraying foreign languages in comics, and looking at comics where a foreign language is actually the predominate language spoken (and therefore not portrayed with brackets, as it is spoken/understood by the main characters). My only concern stems from the fact that I need to portray Usagi speaking what might have been a foreign language- at least, I suppose that is the best way of putting it (because he doesn't speak English, and wasn't certain whether or not Alopex would understand him). Now that she's responded in Japanese though, I'd say it's safe to remove the brackets? :'0 Even though I'm dealing with two main characters, and Alopex's first language is actually English (lolwhy?) But that makes sense, though... right?? ;-; /end insecure rant))

i think with the language, your idea to remove the brackets is good. then if another character ever shows up who speaks English, put the brackets back to denote the different languages.

Yeah, in the comic she makes the comment to another Japanese character that the Shredder thought learning Japanese would 'make her more useful', but it's implied she hadn't learned until recently, because the other character comments that her pronunciation is 'nearly flawless' (so we assume it wasn't the first language she learned) D;
Of course, Usagi wouldn't have known either way- they definitely weren't on speaking terms until now. :'D

Haha well that's certainly the plan :'D I'll probably be putting together more of a portfolio this summer, anyway, with a good deal more original work, and hopefully that might be something I can start showing to publishers. :')

Ahh!! This is getting better and better! I love it! Really, I can already feel the love for this relationship. I dunno, it's in the expressions and the small gestures. Alopex looks reluctant yet at the same time it's not like she has another choice but to deal with Usagi.

My suggestion to you regarding the brackets is to remove them. At this point, we know both characters can speak the same language, so there's no real need for them any longer. To put emphasis on that, and to explain to your readers why the brackets aren't necessary anymore, you could have Usagi comment on that. Something along the lines of "Oh, so you do speak japanese." or a mental note in a thought bubble (although this doesn't seem to be your approach). Alternately, you could have him pry on her origins and formulate his questions in a way that inquires about her language. Maybe something like "Your accent... Did you come from the South?" or "I'm surprised you know japanese. From the looks of you, you're not from here". Whether Alopex responds to these questions is up to you, but it does help the reader understand why the brackets are suddenly dropped.

I'm honestly thinking now that something simple like Usagi stating the fact that they understand one another (in conjunction with the brackets dropping), would be best :> I think you're right in that it would provide the appropriate confirmation... and I can definitely work that into the next page. I'm really so grateful for the input, since you are the viewer, and I need to be writing and illustrating this comic with a viewer's perspective in mind! c:
