Funky style. Which version of Windows is this? XP?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pitkon In reply to delano [2011-03-31 07:18:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yes, it's XP, since Blackbox doesn't work too well under Vista or 7.

The only problem I had with bb under 7 was that it looks odd if you have both Aero and bbleanskin enabled.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pitkon In reply to delano [2011-04-01 07:35:47 +0000 UTC]

It's only logical, since you have two different engines running. Switch off Aero and you should be fine. But how are you using BB? On top of windows' shell (Explorer) or as a stand-alone shell? Do you use a shell switcher-manager? Plus, how does 7 behave with 16-bit apps?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

delano In reply to pitkon [2011-04-02 02:11:29 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I usually switch off bbleanskin. I think the add-on visual styles are prettier than bbleanskin, generally, and bbleanskin has always given me weird bugs, in addition to not working right with some apps.

I run BB as a stand-alone shell, usually. I carry a copy around on my USB stick and load it portably on other PCs sometimes.

As for 16-bit apps, dunno. I don't use any but 7 has pretty good compatibility.

Thanks for all the info! You are right, third party styles/apps probably offer more flexibility (not necessarily prettier, though, it depends on the style) but they don't change on the fly with each style switch, which is a HUGE minus imho. I mean who wants a green theme with red window decorations left over from the skin you used last?

delano In reply to pitkon [2011-04-02 13:40:11 +0000 UTC]

Yep, bbleanskin makes the entire box environment blend together a lot better. However, since Windows 7 I've kinda fallen in love with Aero and prefer to use visual styles that utilize it

Blackbox will always have a special place in my heart, though. The simplicity and style appealed to me and it remained as my only desktop shell for more than half a decade.

I think BB for Windows has the advantage of being both minimalistic and pluralistic at the same time - depending on the style author and the plugins used. That's why it will be an eternal shell, at least imho.

I use it on W7 without problems. Well, maybe a few minor bugs but nothing catastrophic.
Both bbLean and bbClean. Although I'm on x86 system, so there's probably some trouble if using x64 W7.

By the way, there's new xoblite in development, you can get the beta here ->> [link]
Haven't tried it yet, but I assume it's made with new systems in mind.

Whoa! A new Xoblite? That's pretty slick; haven't seen it updated since 2005. I hope they fix the bug with bbleanskin and aero.

I have heard of many BB problems under W7 - maybe BBLeanMod doesn't agree with 7, or maybe you were just lucky... lol. And I know it's almost impossible to run under x64. Another reason I use XP is that I am still in love with PhotoStyler2, an old 16-bit application (now it's abandonware) and I simply refuse to let it go. I understand W7 doesn't like 16-bit apps.
I know about the new Xob - I have tested some builds for Qwilk in the past. Yes, it's quite new and promising (best toolbar configuration and colors I've seen, plus rounded console corners) but Qwilk doesn't care much about window decorations, so there is no bbwinskin/bbleanskin provided. You have to look around for a compatible build. I also had some problems using bbinterface with xob in the past - haven't tried it yet. Being away for some years from my co-moderating and co-administrating post over at boxshots, lostinthebox and bb4win means I lost some touch. Trying to get back
Thanks for all the tips and the information!

Rajliv In reply to pitkon [2011-04-01 08:03:31 +0000 UTC]

for x64, you just need a 64bit build of blackbox. Eg BBLean has it on homepage. [link]
Finding 64bit versions of plug-ins is harder, but luckily many 32bit ones work find under x64 W7.

I'm sure there's alternatives for those old 16bit apps.

Yeah that's a shame there's no window decos for Xob. I tried the new beta and bbLeanskin was not compatible.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pitkon In reply to Rajliv [2011-04-01 08:24:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you do need x64 build and not every branch has one.
Alternatives for 16bit apps? How? Only way I know is run them
About xob: that's the reason I don't use xoblite - unless qwilk comes up with something compatible. BBwinskin by the late unkamunka (BB4WinMod) used to work under Xoblite3. Not sure about this new xob build.

Different than the usual bb shots these days - the trend seems to be minimalism.

Thanks! I was a pluralist ever since I authored my first BB style, almost 10 years ago. And, with the advent of new BB builds and bbinterface, how can anyone resist?

Thanks again! I use a build of BBI that includes button/pressed button option in custom styles, after a request of mine some years back, something the earlier builds did not offer. I will check this out to find out if it's of the same caliber. I probably owe you one
