This just made me realize that I could easily code health bars that have diagonal sections because I can still erase on the x axis and have it look right.
I know the above sentience only makes sense to me so here's a translation: This was inspiring! Thank you Pix3M!

- It all looks great, but it's a bit clunky. The game looks like it will be fun to adventure (if it's an adventuring type game). I don't think you've exactly figured out what you want to do with the big space you have on screen, but you're getting somewhere. The HP bar for the tough enemies will work great, the hearts look good, but the power level could use some adjusting.Keep going .

At first I was going to point out the inconsistency between player's and boss's health meters.
The player's health is represented by single units (hearts), where 1 heart can either count as 1, 2 or even 4 hp, while the boss's health is represented by a long bar which can only show percentage of its total hp. Imho, it should be consistent, eg. 10 hearts for you and 20 for the boss, or regular bars for both of you. But right after that I started thinking about games where such case as yours is used (e.g. The Binding of Isaac, Cave Story).
So, no, I can't argue with that.
Then I started thinking from programmer's point of view and here's what I thought:
1. It may be hard to achieve proper angles on the uh 'slopes' of the bar when it will start to deplete by 1 pixel (e.g. fighting a strong boss), but there are some ways to get around that, so it's not that bad.
2. The boss's name can have a fixed number of characters, but again, one can write a function in such a way it would resize the name and bar so both would fit no matter how long or how short the name is.
And I can't argue with that either.
The only thing I can think of is... um, well... the boss health bar looks like a handlebar
To be honest, I think I'm beginning to like your argument on boss health, and I really like the player and weapon/power stats

Yeah. The health bar was removed from previous versions as there was a miscommunication and it was clear they weren't trying to take a risk using a health bar for a SHMUP.
Reason why different systems are used for bosses and players is that the boss will be constantly hit, where our player instead would be hit rarely, dodging most incoming things. A health bar would make no sense for a game which you're supposed to dodge.

Thanks for explaining. Yes, for a SHMUP this design is REALLY good.

You know what? I think I would write music for Alicorn Blast, if you wouldn't mind.

Why not leave empty hearts permanently visible? I'm not sure I've seen a game where the life meter doesn't have some way to instantly communicate percentage like that.

Management wants us to start with three hearts, but health upgrades can go up to a high enough number. I had depicted how the extra hearts will be displayed
Working on a v4 right now so sit tight
