Dunno the novel, but it's certainly funny. Though my always strong rational mind instantly asks if the water can really be deep enough at that spot for a large whale to go upside down. Ah a well, great image nonetheless.

Thank you very much. As a photographer I guess I was thinking of it as a shot with a long lens which makes things far apart appear closer together.

Aye, I agree it looks a bit like that. Would make that fin even more enormous. There is one thing that throw me off though: wave size. The wave size remains constant across the stream, if the waves in the middle or far side of the stream were a notable distance away they would look like getting smaller, just like the house and pier on the other side looks small. Sorry not trying to nitpick, it's just that this genuinely throws me off.
