I use a Nikon D40x since 2007 with the original lens (18-55), and sometimes with a 70-300 lens (for portraits in the street). Are you satisfied of your Rebel Xs?

I searched for the same model for your Canon but it seems like the prices are much higher (140 euros for the one I have, but my D40x doesn't have an internal system to do the focusing. Maybe if yours got one, then you can buy this model I guess : [link] If not, the price is higher, but I'm not quite sure of what I say).
Maybe you should ask a professional or a sales assistant in a specialized shop I hope you'll find the money to buy it quite soon Sigma makes good quality lens, and cheaper than Canon lenses.

But judging from their website I can see their prices are definitely a lot more reasonable!

You're not, I always enjoy talking about photography. Besides, I had to search for the same lense a few months so ago, so I know it's hard to make a choice when it's something a bit expensive You should have asked for it last Christmas! Just joking
