Atlantis

I built a country
small and green with pine trees
and I placed it
carefully
in the back yard lily pond.

Balanced it on stilts.

I meet you there--but only when
you wake up
on the right side of the bed.

You keep no maps or passports
for the backyard Atlantis.

In fact, you seem somtimes to forget
it is there.

Or was there.

Because one day I waited
in the pouring porcelain rain
and you didn't wake up
--on the right side of the bed or the left.

I waited until I nearly drowned and
then I left.

Shut the garden gate behind me,
Left Atlantis in the lily pond,
Pine tree dreams floating to the surface
Like matchsticks.
