I kinda headcanon that monsters in the underground heavily relies on things they find in the garbage dump. Certain items can be made from magic, but since they're harder to make they're less common to obtain, and probably way more expensive too.

Hm, perhaps gray magic? It is useless when it comes to attacking, but still appears often to spell out a message. Perhaps it can be used to create or manipulate materia?
If you combine that with yellow magic perhaps manages to create some kind of diffuse matter to be shaped into objects?
