Description This is a hand-made protection charm. They're just a way of putting a lot of love and care and good-wishes into a small space.
These are not shitty little friendship bracelets or something lame you make for all your buddies. You only make these for someone you care deeply about, because the superstition is that you're putting all your love and energy and resources into it, and that makes it a powerful object, not something you just hand out. But I suppose that only really works if you're superstitious, doesn't it? I've only ever made and given out one of these in my life, thats how much they mean to me. Also, making one for yourself is so uncool and self-absorbed and shitty that I hope you get squillions of years of bad luck.

so, here's a little step by step tutorial thingy-ma-jigger. Read all the instructions before starting out if you do choose to make one.

Step 1:
Light a candle. Doesn't really matter what kind/color/type, but if it has some connection to who you're making the charm for that's good. Take a length of thin wire, it has to be thin otherwise it becomes too fiddly. bend it so that it becomes the shape of a little man-person-thing, but make sure all your limbs are doubled and that the head is hollow. Everytime you make a bend or a twist in the wire, think of the person you're making this for and think about how you want them to be safe and sturdy and at home, content. The wire frame represents a strong inside, the backbone, so to speak.

Step 2:
shove a bead inside the head... that sounds really blunt, The bead has to be your favourite color, and small enough that it wont look absurd on the wire body, but still slightly larger than proportional, because the wrapping will dwarf it otherwise. The bead has to be your favourite color, and you can kiss it if you want, for extra good luck and shizz. The bead represents having a clear head and seeing clearly.

Step 3:
Take three strips of clean white linen, quite small and thin, depending on the size of your figure, and wrap them around the metal frame until it's completely covered. With the first strip, concentrate on the persons appearance. Call them up in your mind and concentrate on what they look like while wrapping. For the second strip think about that persons hopes and dreams and ambitions. For the third strip, think about what YOU want for them. Don't be lame and wish that your boyfriend will become rich and famous...think about the less material things, simple things that last a lifetime and would make them happier and give them a better life. The linen-wrapping process represents the 'inner protection' part of the charm...the padding, the love. It's the warm-fuzzy layer.

Step 4:
Put the candle in front of you and just feel it. This may sound a bit new age-ish, but the whole meditation and calm care of the process is what gives the charms their 'power'. Take the candle and seal the loose end of each piece of linen with a single drop of wax. It doesn't matter if it spills, these aren't about being perfect, it just makes it a bit messy.

Step 5:
Take a length of black cotton or thread or something of the kind, and wrap it tightly around the linen. This layer it's very important to concentrate on your "protection" thoughts....the things you hope this person will never experience, the things in their life you want to help them with. It's moderately important to do this neatly and tightly, not only for the superstion (dont let that magic escape yo!) but also so that it doesn't unravel and look messy [link] carry on going until theres no linen left visible, and then do another layer for luck. You can seal it up with superglue or something, or just tie it, as long as you tie it tightly so it doesn't come loose. This layer is the last of the protection 'wards' (omg so harree pottah) and it represents the shield you hold up for this person against the rest of the world, if not literally, than just for the time it takes you to make this charm.

The last step is just taking a ribbon and threading it through somewhere and tying it up. Then just close your eyes and holds it between your hands for a few minutes, and concentrate all your love and energy into it. Then give it to the person as soon as possible, and hopefully it'll bring them a little luck

To the person I gave this to...I would say a whole huge thing....but words are shitty, so I'll say this instead:
