thanks--they were really friendly. Momma duck just let them wander about and she would take them around the campsite to show them off to everyone.

That's so cute! I just love ducks, and chickens and well animals in general.

I love ducks...not chickens though, they scare me. I would like to keep chickens though--for eggs. Strange

ha ha, yeah that is strange, but understandable at the same time. They do provide food after all, so it makes sense to want to have some to get free eggs.

This is perfection and trust on both levels. Momma with her babes!

Well worth the wait, bravo girl!!

pixlepixie In reply to Petalcuts [2008-06-21 22:39:52 +0000 UTC]

actually they were right at home with us there...to the point of wandering into our tents and taking food from our hands. I was as close as I look. Momma was there the whole time watching over them though. ...I love ducks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Petalcuts In reply to pixlepixie [2008-06-22 02:53:17 +0000 UTC]

The geese here are like that with their goslings. This year it seems more survived so the momma's are more trusting and when I do not have the dogs with me she will let the little ones run around me but she keeps a very close eye.

The Daddy on the other hand stands guard and gives these low key warning honks that lets you know "one wrong move and I will have your arm off at the shoulder joint girl".

I love the ducks, geese and of late the coots, such odd and yet similar creatures

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pixlepixie In reply to Petalcuts [2008-06-22 11:18:12 +0000 UTC]

yeah. they are odd...I don't think we get coots here in Inverness (I've not seen any). Recently on the river I've seen some loons. I do like loons--no babies though.

Momma duck in this picture was making strange little squeaky noises to let them know where she was.

Petalcuts In reply to pixlepixie [2008-06-22 12:10:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh Loons and Herons are a permanent fixture here, the coots have just stated showing up, I do love their little webbed none-jointed feet.

They seem to be the black sheep of the water fowl life.

pixlepixie In reply to Petalcuts [2008-06-22 14:03:07 +0000 UTC]

can't say I would know about coots

Petalcuts In reply to pixlepixie [2008-06-22 14:17:09 +0000 UTC]

I would make a long reply on what I have found out about them but do not want to bore you, just to say they are different unique creatures.

One year the momma duck brought her ducklings to show off to the house, I was washing my car the dang things waddled right into the backseat of the car and made themselves at home

The Momma made sounds for them cause they could not see her anymore, but she looked at me like "their yours now I am going to take a break here, enjoy them".

They are a treat indeed
