Description
The Federated States Building is Channel Island's Parliament Building, located in Channel Island's capital St. Helier. It houses Channel Islands' parliament and the Royal Court. the Building is bounded by the Royal Square on one side and Hill Street on the other, which houses the States Chamber and Royal CourtThe Royal Court House has always stood on the site of the present building and can be traced back to the 12th century. Subsequent reconstruction and building was carried out in 1648, 1769, and 1879.
Until the late 18th century the States Assembly had no Chamber of its own and met in the Royal Court. After a further period of reconstruction to the Court buildings undertaken between 1864 and 1866 the States yet again were compelled to sit in the Royal Court.
After the 2nd World War, the building once again extended to accommodate most of representatives of the other islands of Guernsey, Alderney, Herm and Sark when Channel Islands became an independent crown.
