The Philippine Navy has no submarine forces. The Philippine Navy ordered 2 Type 214 submarines, designated as the Bangus-class to meet the needs of the Philippine Navy and forming its first submarine unit.The Bangus Class submarine is a German Type 214 submarine, built for the Philippine Navy and fits the Navy's requirement. The Philippines purchased two Type 214 submarines.
Modifications include the capability to fire submarine-launched UGM-84 Harpoon Anti-Ship Missile.
The sub's maximum speed is 10 kn surfaced / 20 kn submerged with the range of 19,300 km (12,000 miles) while submerged of 780 km @ 15 km/h (420 nmi @ 8 kn)
The two submarine are named Bangus and Butanding respectively, after Philippine fishes.
