ENS Arai Ikunosuke was the first aircraft carrier of the Ezo Navy. She was the ex-USS Bataan (CVL-29) that was loan to Ezo in 1960 and formally transferred in late 1972 as a ASW carrier. ENS Ikunosuke recieved extensive refits and modernization in 1980. The ships received an enclosed hurricane bow, angled deck, steam catapult and enclosed island.The carrier's speed was originally 31.5 knot (36 mph 58 km/h) maximum with the range of 13,000 nautical miles (24,000 km) at 15 knots (28 km/h). Due to her extensive refits, her speed exceeds to 32 knots (59 km/h).
ENS Arai Ikunosuke carries 8 × Sea Harriers and 8 × SH-3Ds, however, the ship is also designed to accomodate 8 x A-4 Skyhawks. A total of up to 33 fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.
Armaments were only 4 x Bofors 40mm AA Guns
The ship. Arai Ikunosuke, was named after an Ezo naval commander that fought against imperial forces in the Naval Battle of Hakodate in 1868.
She remained the fleet's flagship until ENS Enomoto Takeaki replaced her in 1998. She is still berthed at Hakodate Naval Base as a museum ship.
