Description
"I'd like to be a stick of butter." said Fluttershy. So Twilight whipped up a spell that turned her into one!... Okay that never happened, lol!
==========
Program used: GIMP 2.6
Resource used: fav.me/d4qiz5i by for a color reference guide.
Layers: 18
Time Spent: About 13 hours
==========
I've seen various other "Buttershy" drawings out there, but none how I imagined them. So I decided to try my hand at making my own. So while the idea of "Buttershy" isn't exactly mine, the vision of this incarnation is. The character isn't mine either of course as Fluttershy belongs to Hasbro. This is just fan art, but you probably knew that.
As for why it took so long to make, I was essentially learning how to imitate the show's vector art style in a bitmap image creator, so I had to figure out the best ways to do things and was essentially learning it as I went, so parts of it are a bit smoother than others as I figured out better techniques, but I did my best to iron out problems. (A lot of "Crtl + Z"s were used as well.
By far the best things in GIMP for imitating the art style are the paths tool and ellipse tool because they yield the cleanest lines. The best way to use them is to carve out color blobs you draw on a new layer into the shapes and lines you want. For lines, you could also probably use the paths tool and "stroke selection" at a line thickness that matches the thickness you need then adjust them as needed with the eraser. But by the time I thought of that, all the lines were done, lol! Next time I suppose!
It is next to impossible to get perfectly clean, sharp lines consistently using just a pressure-sensitive tablet and circle brush... or at least ones that look like the show's. Early on I tried that for certain spots and the best ways I came up with using just a brush for lines was to do them in a single smooth stroke then erase the leftovers into sharp lines (if needed) or just generally clean them up or to hold the shift key for straight lines and do it in very small segments using the brush size you need (I was using basic 11, 23, 27 and 31 circle brushes) for a certain line thickness. But this leads to unevenness at times that is hard to smooth out.
So yeah, that's where my time went on this project that probably could've been a lot simpler, lol! If I made another one, I'm sure I could do it much faster since I know the techniques I need to imitate the show's style. I... probably should've just sketched it in GIMP, then learned how to vector it in Inkscape for a massive resolution picture export. But I have a hard time getting myself to stray from my beloved GIMP, lol!
In any case though, I hope you like it!
(Critiques and tips are welcomed for future projects!)
Enjoy!

I know this may be a question that will take time for you to answer but, how exactly do you shade your works? I've tried several methods and brushes but can't find a brush or dynamic (or a combo of the two) for shading on GIMP.

Having a tablet with pressure sensitivity is immensely helpful for shading, so I'd recommend that if you don't have one yet. But it's not impossible to get by without one.
For brushes, the GIMP BrushBox is what I like to use and is a really nice resource in general:
fav.me/d6byhe2
I also combine it with the default GIMP brushes (some I modified the spacing of a bit to look smoother) as well as a few I made in my brush packs. But no matter what texture I want to do with my shading, I use about the same technique:
1: Pick a brush that has "softened" edges that has the texture you want. Basically what that means is that the center of the brush will be more dense with color and/or texture than the edges. in GIMP 2.8, the "Hardness 25" (With a spacing of 10) or "Texture 01" brushes are good examples of this.
2: Make a new fully transparent layer above all other layers.
3: Start gradually painting in where you want shade (imagine where your light sources are) using the brush you want to use and a paint dynamic like "pressure opacity" if you are using a tablet. If you don't have a pressure sensitive tablet, you can just lower the brush opacity in the tool options to like... 20 or so (It varies from brush to brush) and paint over the same spots over and over and/or turn on "incremental" in the tool options until you get a pretty satisfactory result where you want shade to be. Paint with the shape of the object as well. Change the brush size as needed to fit it in where you want it to fit too. Don't worry if it doesn't look right at first because chances are you'll always have to alter it. You just want to block in all the areas you want shading in at this point. You might even want to fill the whole area in with the shading color you want to use actually as that works too. But might be more work on the next step.
4: Erase where you don't want the shading color or the spots that has too much shading using the same brush to make the highlights.
5: Repeat 3 and 4 until you get the result you want. When you combine 3 and 4 like this, you can erase and paint using the same brush to keep consistent texture throughout the image. It can take some trial and error until it looks right to you, but that's how I shade. You might want to try "smudging" colors together as well with the same brush because that too can move the color where you want it to go.
I may combine with with the layer overlay setting "multiply" or "overlay" too depending on what I want. But the techniques after that are the same.
If you don't understand, try this quick experiment:
Paint a big hard-edged black circle on the canvas with a dark color (1 click with a circle) and imagine it's going to be a ball. Using the eraser tool, take a low hardness circle like the 25 with a lighter color at the same brush size at and use that to "carve" out some light on the ball with the eraser, the center of the brush being the lightest spot. It'll look like a solid 3D ball to you very quickly doing this because you'll see what that technique does: cuts into color to lighten it.
I hope this helps!
Edit: I decided to make a mini tutorial in dA Muro to demonstrate the ball experiment here: fav.me/d7xokub
There you can play it back and see it done in steps. Watch it in "artist view" and slow it down for an even better look since that shows the tool settings as well as the progress.

Very useful indeed Thanks
I do have a tablet but I only used it for lineart and signing my works. Now I'm fully gonna use it for shading after seeing this.

Just wondering are you a fan of Batman Beyond and Samurai Jack because those also have AMAZING styles!

Australia is getting the entire first season eventually. I don't know why they haven't done it for other regions as well. Unless they think Itunes and Netflix is sufficient enough.
I do like those two. Though I don't think I finished watching either of them. I don't remember as it's been so long since I seen them.

That would be a HUGE mistake if they don't do physical sets here. UGHH I'd be so mad.
Good job on your walkthroughs by the way. Very entertaining.

I agree. They'd sell like crazy. So they not only would be giving people what they want, but it would also be good for business.
I'd be mad too if that never happened. Though if it never happens, I suppose we could import the full set from Australia (Here's where they are listed for purchase: [link] ) and tweak our DVD players to be able to play other DVD regions like 4 (Australia) from this site: [link] (I already tweaked my Sungale 2026 just in case, lol!)
Thanks! I try my best.
