Because most of the fandom is obsessed with the mane six as an aesthetically balanced unit, believing them to be complete without Spike, and more inseparable from each other than Twilight is from Spike. Some bronies even put loads of work into phenomenal projects that incorporate literally every main and supporting character in the cast, whilst the lead character's (Twilight) closest friend (Spike) never crosses their pony-happy little mind. It's never one of the M6 or the CMC they forget, always Spike.

My biggest mistake as an FiM fan was admitting to myself that I gave a shit about Spike, because this is the one and only thing about FiM that drains my optimism, and it does so frequently. This leads to a lot of sour commentary from me, because I'm one of those delusional imbeciles who likes to pretend the show is about open, unbiased friendship rather than a toy set of six ponies. When other bronies tell me what they think of me, it makes me feel like shit, which makes me want to be more hurtful to everyone around me, including other Spike fans.

Wow, thanks for sharing your feelings. I'm not sure about what "phenomenal projects" you are talking about, but from a visual artist's point of view, there might be a reason for them not to incorporate Spike aside from just "not giving a sh*t". Firstly, Spike is a dragon, his anatomy and movement is quite different from ponies, and that may not fit with an artist's skill and overall design. Secondly, he is a male (duh), which makes him less attractive in general to male audiences and difficult to "beautify" without looking strange.

Though I see your point about the show being about unbiased friendship, I cannot say I agree with your method of expression about it. I do believe people have their freedom of choice in their artistic expressions, and if their vision don't align with ours, "sour comments" certainly isn't the best way to change that. (Did you change your point of view about Spike because of others' comments?) 

Well, sorry for the rant, but I hope the show and its fandom brings you happiness instead of sorrow, if others don't give a sh*t about Spike, let them be, letting others' behaviour affect your happiness is just not worth it, I think.

Yes, I think those fuzzy edges are really what makes this seem busy (and they are a perfect reflection of a lack of confidence in painting), thank you for pointing that out.

Ahh... actually no, as I haven't got the chance to read about FOE fics. But I started out with no clear goal of what I'm going to paint for this, so I guess this can be whatever you think it is.
