Having come from a long lineage of military family dating back to the American Civil War, Cadence Brennan earned the rank of Captain in the United States Army in 2029. In 2032, Brennan left the Army for reasons unknown, and found employment as Captain of Security Team One at the Thascaene Research Campus shortly thereafter. On August 29, 2036, Brennan lead her team through the corridors of Thascaene laboratories with the intent of rescuing technicians and eliminating dangerous extra-terrestrial parasitic creatures which had escaped from their containment units following a total power-failure of the building. Brennan was the only member of the Security Team to escape the campus unscathed.

Following Outbreak Day, Brennan's activities become murky by rumors spread throughout the survivor communes. Some stories claim her to be the masked "Bug-Buster" (a heavily-armed woman in military-grade tactile gear who shows no mercy when it comes to combating the Infected and destroying their hives) spotted in West Tennessee shortly after the outbreak. Another tale states that Brennan was captured and taken to Texas to be sold off in an uninfected women slave market in Houston three years after Outbreak Day, though the convoy of prisoners of which Brennan was allegedly part of never it's destination.

The more recent rumors circulating in the communities tell of a woman matching Brennan's description living on a heavily-fortified farm in the Missouri Ozarks, just a few miles east of an old military base on I-44.
