Apparently This wasn't As high a caliber as what they're looking for.I was shut down personally.Conan is my favorite hero of all and I wanted to show it. At least the version I grew up with,but I'm just some sucker.
It's 2 yrs. old now.I 've only drawn him once since...

Thanks! YOU CAN do this with markers,TOO!! I'm just some schmoe that uses what he can. You can mix them with colored pencils and pastels as well!Paper texture is a factor,of course.....practice,practice-

My experience with comic companies and "caliber" is that what they really mean is work doesn't suck hard enough. I've seen some truly exceptional work rejected by comic companies just because it wasn't crap. Not unlike the state of film composing these days. This would have been right at home next to Earl Norem and Ernie Chan, artists with a lot more class than the shit the graces comic covers these days.

Norem!! Yes!!I can't recall ONE cover that sucked from him.They're a few guys I'm forgetting,too.That fully painted stuff was for ME and I couldn't wait for the next Savage Sword to drop or the new novels(which my brother collected)They used to really care. In my journeys, I've often found that "your work" is the LAST deciding factor.You gotta' know someone up there and it's goddamned sad.More over,they must LIKE you.It is the looming politics of publishing that made me step back....

Yeah. It's also a bit of a oroboros cycle, too. The market keeps eating its own tail, and thus never gets to see the benefit of variety. It's a shame, but that's just how it is.
Norem also did a lot of old Masters of the Universe art too. The kind of stuff that takes stupid toys and squeezes exciting reality out of it. One of the few complaints I have about the Savage Sword collection books is that it doesn't reprint all those great covers in color (and bungles the order of some stories).
Keep at it man. You can't lose if you don't quit!

Now compared to usual Conan comic covers, I supposed it got rejected because of the pose and maybe facial expression ?
I suppose you intended to draw him wary and tense, or trying to evaluate you to decide if he attacks or not, but you can also look at him like he is relaxed or focused on some far away thought...
Classical covers show him in the heat of battle, raging, or protecting some scared hot girl.
Love the bi-color choice btw ! Reminds me of my old 16 bits 2D scroller games !

Great work! I like the incredible level of detail you pakced into it, and horough-hewn it looks. Very appropriate for Conan, I'd say.
