Description
I don’t know how long I have been working on this. On and off for a few weeks. I can never keep track of the hours as being on the computer is constantly distracting me with subeta and lolchats.
This is sort of an emotional post for me. I feel like I could put another 48 hours into it and still not be finished. In posting this I hope I can get some intelligent feed back and critique. I am aware that for the sake of a better composition I should probably crop some of the ear fluff and some of the top ear but for the sake of everything I have done so far, I wanted to show you everything.
Let me just say that doing this has taught me many things about open canvas and my tablet. My technique is not perfect because it is always evolving, your input will be of great service to me and the way in which it develops. You don’t have to be mean, but if you feel like I should be yelled at about something by all means go for it.
I have had a lot of time to think since Hex’s preliminary design was drawn. And while this image is not 100% accurate, allow me to explain what I have collected thus far.
In this story magic and energy are the same thing. Energy becomes a magical substance when it collects and compounds and eventually becomes self aware.
Hexolite - A neutral-magical or free magic spirit creature.
A collector who is in possession of The (or a idk were there others before this?) Nightmare Mask. One who has chosen the path of being a dream entity. A collector as in it collects an assortment of things from peoples dreams and whenever possible corporeal “real world” items that it stows safely away inside its own dreams... somehow.
By collecting we can only assume it is taking without permission.
Hex being special as it (or in this case she) is
is just about as impervious to the effects of the mask (see below) as you can get. Its essence and energy blend with the mask as if it had been made for “her”. (and it was as far as anybody in this story knows.)
Yes over the past million or however many long years Hex has been around (I can’t say alive because I don’t think it ever had a corporeal body) the mask has begun to deteriorate the neutral magic and is beginning to ever so slightly twist it into a negative energy. When if ever the mask is removed, it has bleached the color from Hex’s face leaving an outline so in essence the mask is always being worn... sort of a “this is what you get” for getting away with wearing the mask for so long. Wearing the stars under its chin in order to balances the negative energy from the mask with positive. Even if in the end Hexolite is a rather hypocritical creature.
The Nightmare Mask - “feeds” off of selfish impulses. The wants and desires of those who have everything and still want more. The longer one wears the mask the harder it is to remove, and the more damaged their original shell becomes. Eventually they are unable to remove it and it slowly begins to eat away at their soul. Something like a coma. A dream that stretches into infinity. One will become unable to differentiate between what they and it desires.
Over a time the host body will begin to decompose and the spirit then bound to the mask will become infatuated with finding another someone to wear, become addicted to, and eventually become part of the mask. A greedy, hungry, and self satisfying thing.
In this render I hope you are able to tell that the mask creates illusions on top of whatever it is set on. Hex’s face is not in fact broken, it just appears as such. Though over time scars and marks will begin to appear even when the mask is removed. A rather fun way to frighten small children.

I can tell that this is definitely a turning point drawing for you. It looks like there's a lot of understanding that came with it gained through trial and error as well as a mark of growth.
Your style is really, really starting to develop, and I can see it in this. I adore your use of texture here. The soft bases and blending paired with the sharper linear aspects (and using line alone to give a sense of color) translates really well in this piece.
As for the cropping you mentioned, I don't think cropping the ear fluff is necessary, or the top of the ear, but do give more space at the top of the canvas. The ear coming so close to the edge like that almost creates a tangent and can be distracting to the viewer. It's not a necessary change, as you have so much attention and detail to the face that the attention remains held there, but just a suggestion.
My only other suggestion would be to figure out a clear light source. It definitely looks like you have one (at the right of the painting, right?) But your values are so close together that it makes it hard to tell. I know it can be intimidating to go darker with shading, but doing so could help make the face look more lively and really give it more dimension.
That's it for any critique. The texture in this still blows me away though. I find something new every time I look at it... the glittery surface, the subtle addition of color in the ear fur... beautiful work in all

holy, effing, shit.
I think the detail in the image's concept is just as gorgeous and thorough as the image itself.
I love...how you draw deterioration. It reminds me of fin rot in a fish.
I love this.

I am confused about the ears...it looks like she has both on one side of her head.
But other than that, I really, really like it.
