I'd recommend starting working the 3 layers of colors then mixing in the effects. shadow base highlights...I see some lacking a bit more then others.

Yeah I worked on that bit for a good five hours and just couldn't seem to bring the greens out like I wanted them to, I'm practicing like crazy so I can only hope I get it better next time

haha! totally understandable, but it's the layers that "pop" that make a difference, you can make 1000's but if all people will see is 3-5 go with that, it's up to the "emotion" or "feel" you wanna get across.
You can see my colors and that of my bud we've both been coloring about the same amount of time, but you can see we color differently but still get the point across with the pics. The Little Big Heads that he colors in and the one I did are the perfect example of the different styles and the same feel.

What I wanted, was WAY more green, but the more I messed with it the more it seemed to recede lol! I could see what I wanted but couldn't get to it 
I was dead pleased with the glow on his face though, although when you call it the "interactive light source" it sounds much more epic than my "it's a glowey light"
I'm gonna keep at it, and keep working on it until I find how it works for me, I think I was relying a bit too much on tutorials to just tell me all I needed to know, rather than working it out for myself which seems to work better for me
