Description EDIT: My brother let me use his desktop to draw so I colored the former grayscale! ^0^ I hate working with grayscales . It's hard to get the colors you want right. Hope it looks ok~

Yeah, I drew a dromedary. Totally don't know why I suddenly felt like drawing such an animal. I looked at many refs because I like the look of camelids and ended up sketching one~

As I've been forcing myself to draw more "professionally" lately I took time to think of how to caricature this species effectively. I therefore went for curvy lines and inspired myself from Egyptian and Maghrebian aesthetics as this animal comes from North Africa, hence the thick black eyebrows and the exaggerated curvy nose (I love Aquiline noses by the way). As for the eye, I didn't know how to render eyelashes in a clean way and camel-like animals have long eyelashes that are not to be forgotten, so I encircled his eye with thick dark lines and shaped it in a way similar to ancient Egyptian make-up. I then felt a little twirled beard would give an echo to that eye and reinforce -maybe, the cultural inspiration. I tried to cut the overall wavy linework with some straights here and there. Perhaps I should have used more of straight lines I don't know... I feel it may be a little too curvy. Like, I should have gone straighter on the fur on the below side of the neck.

I loved working on this portrait. I wasn't going for a very detailed shading but also need to work on muscle structures and to be sure I was accurate in my render of anatomy despite the caricatural aspect I decided to render some facial muscles while doing the shading.

Also I'm sorry for the black and white drawings but my computer has shitty color values and I wouldn't want to end up publishing something over-saturated... I'm still not sure if the greyscale I do are ok by the way (don't hesitate to tell me if the contrasts are too high).

Hope you like it~

Inspired by 's work which I adore~

Well, this reminds me to Jafar (the villian from Aladin) but as a dromedary xD I love how you made the eyelashes <3 I've always loved that Egyptian make-up style <3
I think you did well n.n as far as I remember, the characteristic things from this animals are the eyelashes, the lip, the nose and the masseter muscle n.n so you did a good job with the anatomy n.n I really like it n.n
I've never understood the concept of contrats...but it looks fine to me xD

Good job <3

Yay for Jafar!
It was a good idea xD the fairy of inspiration just came to your mind and said "here, have this" (?)
You're welcome n.n
Ooooooh...then I think it have a good contrast xD thank for the explanation <3

And, again, your welcome n.n
Btw, I found this article/video on Facebook the other day (a friend shared it). It's a little long (the video at least), but maybe it can help you drawing more realistic animals n.n : www.cartoonbrew.com/sponsored-…

I already watch Aaron Blaise's teaching material. I actually learned the last things I've learned, from him. But thanks for the link I'll check it out to see if I missed something~

What a sophisticated, elegant looking dromedary. I find that the balance between straight angles and curves here works really well. I think dromedaries as quite curvy creatures with flowing lumps and humps, no pun intended, as oppose to strong, sharp angles.
Eyelashes I always find hard yet you've manged to create the same feel with the thickly lined and heavy lidded eye as well as incorporating an Egyptian feel with the long wing.
I really like this piece all in all, I get the feeling that he could spit at someone passing by at any given moment, without warning haha.

I'll try to do more caricatures of the kind in the future.

I think that the style of drawing is based on Aladdin. Or I just have such a fantasy?Β Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Plumpig In reply to GremWiser [2017-11-09 17:19:06 +0000 UTC]

Well actually it's written in the description that I got inspiration for the style in which I drew it from Egyptian and overall Maghrebian aesthetics and culture(s). But I guess they did the same for Aladdin so I wouldn't be surprised if there were resemblances. ^^ I take it as a compliment by the way, thank you for being sensitive to artists' styles. <3
